We’re Already Winners…

After winning La CarranzaSevilla Campeona

La Liga hasn’t even kicked off and Sevilla have won two trophies. We’re not talking Copa del Rey or UEFA cup here but so far in pre-season things are definitely looking promising.

Out of all La Liga teams, Sevilla has had the most impressive pre-season record playing 9 games with 7 of those being victories and 2 ending in draws. Only Athletic Bilbao has more victories with 8, but they have also lost 3 games. Sevilla as a team has been impressive, yes, but there have also been some standout individual performances. In particular, Chevantón who has scored 10 goals thus far playing in 7 games. The Uruguayan has seemed to re-gain his confidence after being given a main role in Manolo Jímenez’ plans for the upcoming season. Chevantón and Koné have started most of the 9 games so far and dispite Koné not scoring many (1), he has been the provider for many of Cheva’s goals.

It is a bit too early to get excited about anything, but to see the likes of AC Milan, Inter, and Villareal held scoreless you have to have a certain sense of optimism about the upcoming season.

After winning the Russian Railways Tournament, Sevilla traveled to Amsterdam where they were not as successful, and dispite not losing a match, finished third. This was all quickly forgotten when they traveled back to Spain to take on and defeat Villareal in the first round of El Carranza, an annual tournament featuring 4 of the top teams in Spain’s Primera and Segunda divisions. With Athletic losing to Cádiz 1-0, it meant it would be an all Andaluz final with Cádiz hosting Sevilla. Sevilla easily handled their fellow Andalucians with a convincing scoreline of 3-0. The first 2 goals were scored by the man of the pre-season, Chevantón, and it was all topped off by Adriano.

Convincing enough?

With these two trophies in Sevilla’s cabinet already, they will be looking to add a third when they host Málaga in the I Torneo Antonio Puerta on August 23rd.

In other news, it was stated this week that Barcelona is interested in Diego Capel, and although Capel said he is happy at Sevilla and is not thinking about moving, we all know how football works these days, and when the big clubs come knocking, you can’t just say no. Not to mention that Capel has a buy-out clause of only 15 million Euros which is easily within Barca’s price range. If we lost Capel, it would be a huge blow seeing as we’ve already lost 3 major stars in Alves, Keita, and Poulson and losing him would definitely limit our options on the left flank, with Adriano being inconsistent.

Capel is not going anywhere. Begiristain from Barcelona, in an interview, clearly stated that Barcelona is NOT interested in Capel.

Who seems to be the frontrunner to end up in Barca is Hernanes from Brazil. That’s the latest I’ve read!!

No mention of the ill-will created in the game vs. Villareal?!?! Two red cards for Villareal and one for Capel, and a lot of mean tackles and pushing and shoving.

Can’t wait for the season to start!!

    Best regards,

Rical, hopefully what your saying about Capel is true, so far I’ve only read his comments which if anything to go by, he is going to be in a Sevilla shirt in a week and a half.

Also, thought I’d leave out the whole Villareal fight out of it and make everything so far in pre-season seem perfect :)

It’s nice to see other Sevilla news in English without writing it myself!!

    A few points, from me.

Chevantón will unfortunately play in a few games this season, but it will revert back to every year’s scenario, when LuFa and Kanoute run the show and Cheva ends up scoring a few goals to save our ass in the Copa del Rey and that’s about it. You just have SO many forwards in the team, even Renato or Adriano get put up top more that we’ve seen Cheva lately. Add to it that he was injured for a majority of last season, and it’s not looking good for him anyway.

Capel isn’t going anywhere. Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Real Madrid, Kanouté signed for Tottenham, etc etc. Don’t believe the hype. Also, no way Capel is leaving to go to Brazil. He would only go to England, if anywhere else, and probably after a few good seasons in Sevilla.

Did you see the size of that trophy on the right?? Holy shit that thing is the size of a VW Beetle.

This year’s word of the season ‘consistency’ Last season, we would smoke a team like Real Madrid in the Supercopa, but lose to Murcia. Consistency will be key in maintaining a solid starting 11 that will also for substitutions, when necessary.

If we can get back to the ‘everyone work as a team’ mentality that was started by Juande Ramos, we will be a-ok.

Capel won’t be making the switch to Barcelona this year…Txiki isn’t interested, it would seem — the people over at my part of the blog are saying no one wants a third Sevilla player in the same year, almost as a point of pride — and while I think that Capel is an immense talent, I don’t know how great his upside will be.

Maybe in a year or two he’ll be worth a “bigger” club going after him, but right now he has more maturation to do before he can be considered a world class talent. That 15m buyout clause is pretty cheap, though, if he’s going to become the left-sided Messi…so it’s all a gamble and it’s not one that Barcelona is willing to make at the moment.

As for the season in general, I hope Sevilla does well. They’re a good squad and I love watching them (and watching them do well). The league has gotten so much better in the last couple of years and I’m looking forward to another year when it’s not just a question of who else will get into the CL by getting 3rd and 4th. Barcelona and Real Madrid need strong domestic competition because that makes everything that much more exciting!

Capel to Brazil?!?!?! Where did you hear/read that?!?!?!

I mentioned that the player named Hernanes, from Brazil, seems to be the guy Barcelona wants for the left side.

    Best regards!

Theres two ways to look at the whole Kone thing… IMO I don’t rate him at all, and I think this is the perfect opportunity for Cheva to step up and show us what we know he can do and what he’s been doing all pre-season, and that’s score goals.

Eh, Kone was a good player, but honestly, we’ve got people uptop, so I’m not worried about that.

Maybe Chevantón will actually get a game this season??
