Villarreal 0-2 Sevilla, Fabiano is Back; and my Thoughts on El Clásico

By: Anthony | May 3rd, 2009

There have been many “must win” matches this season but really, this was an absolute MUST win. We traveled to El Madrigal needing all three points against a recently resurgent Villarreal side who was also looking to jump into a Champions League qualification spot.

Jiménez employed an extremely strange lineup as Jesús Navas was left on the bench and Konko started on the right flank in his place. Kanouté started up top alongside Luis Fabiano, Diego Perotti was on the left side with Duscher and Renato in the middle and the backline consisted of Fernando Navarro, Julien Escudé, Squillaci and Adriano.

The match was extremely boring at first, so much so that I actually was changing back and forth between it and the Toronto FC match (yes, the MLS, that basically says it all). The only lively looking player was Diego Perotti (as usual) but his crosses weren’t being met by either Kanouté or Fabiano who struggled to sync early on in the match. On the 13th minute though both teams woke up when Nihat his a freekick from an awkward angle but it found the top of the crossbar which gave Palop and our defense quite the scare.

On the 40th minute Kanouté headed in an Adriano cross but he was rightfully flagged for offside and the goal was called back as a result. Right after this, Eguren had a chance at our end but headed his attempt embarrassingly wide.

We went into the half with nothing to show for and also knowing something needed to change if we were to have any chance at taking all three points back to Nervión.

You would have thought that both sides who had so much to gain from this match would come out after half with all guns blazing but no, we both started the same way we finished the first half. It wasn’t until just before the hour mark that Kanouté fought so hard (like he always does) to win the ball off a miscue by the Villarreal defender, before dishing it off to Luis Fabiano who smashed it through the legs of Diego Lopez and put us up 1-0.

All was not good for us though as about 10 minutes later Konko was given his second yellow card of the match for apparently tripping Pires and thus, was sent off and we were reduced to 10 men. Because we were now down a man, Jiménez took off our goal scorer, Fabiano and changed him for Maresca to vill the void in midfield left by Konko.

Despite being a man down we sealed the deal when Renato chipped the ball over to big Fredi Kanouté who controlled with the greatest of ease like he always does and smashed a low left footed half volley which hit the inside of the Diego Lopez’ post and found the back of the net. An absolutely brilliant goal for an absolutely brilliant player.

Those three points were ever so vital to us because it not only ended our 4 game losing streak but also with the help today of Espanyol who toppled Valencia 3-0 and Numancia who brushed Málaga aside 2-0, we’re sitting pretty in third place and a fairly easy few games left in the season. Valencia and Villarreal still have to play each other while we finish off our season at home to Mallorca, away at Osasuna, back home to face Deportivo la Coruña and then play our final match away at Numancia. All four are clearly winnable matches and with this victory yesterday we should have the confidence to push on and do just that.

The bad news is that next week both Konko and Fernando Navarro will be out through suspension with the latter accumulating numerous yellow’s. It could be a blessing in disguise though as I don’t rate Konko at all and Navarro has been pretty shaky lately and a more solid Dragutinovic will most likely start in his place when we take on Mallorca.

My thoughts on El Clásico
Well thank God for that. Not only was it good to see my second most hated team in Spain lose in emphatic fashion to an indestructible Barcelona side.

Watching Barcelona play is a footballing orgasm. They’re just absolutely amazing and play the most beautiful football in the world, in my opinion anyway.

I also can’t hide my secret man crush for Lionel Messi, not because he’s easily the best footballer in the world, but simply because there’s something about him you can’t hate. Regardless of if you’re a mierda fan, or whoever you are, if you love football, you love Lionel.

Yesterday he displayed a strong message on his shirt which in Catalan read “Síndrome X Fràgil” which translates to Fragile X Syndrome which is genetic problem that leads to emotional, mental, and sometimes physical problems, basically similar to autism. Last month Lionel Messi spent a day with children who suffer from this horrible syndrome and due to suffering from his own problems as a child, he wanted to reach out in the local Barcelona community as well as Spain as a whole to help these children.

A great heart, a great player and a massive part of the best team in the world. It’s good to see justice prevail for once and it’s even sweeter when the mierda are on the receiving end of 6 goals.

I wish Capel would’ve started. He was our best player at the Camp Nou, and he scored last weekend. I’m just hoping his head doesn’t get turned. I’m pretty sure Perotti is surprised himself at the amount of games he’s started. But it isn’t like he doesn’t deserve it.

Overall, it was a splendid victory. All I could see is a strong finish ahead of us.

i admit that im also getting a little concerned/interested about what this all means about capel’s future here…

on one hand, it would be a pretty bad job of boosting his value for a trade to have him sitting on the bench so much. but on the other, the guy just has barely played for us the last few months and im sure he’s pissed about it. do you all think maybe they’re trying to keep his value low to be sure to be able to keep him? that would be sort of messed up, but in some ways its the most feasible explanation i can come up with.

unless they’re trying to boost perotti’s value in preparation for a trade. but id be pretty bummed about that the way he’s played. i want to watch him for a while.

the offseason will definitely have some intriguing story lines to follow.

You know villareal havent scored against us since November 2007. Its only three matches but its still pretty good
And has anyone noticed atletico slowly climbing back up-they’re now fifth.

SRH i doubt well sell Perotti because we’re sevilla-we dont sell our youth. (Especially if they’re wingers!)But that said i think its either him or capel and im honestly not sure whos going but i think it’ll be Capel since he’ll geet a better price going to 1 of the English beg four or if he is disgruntled and has a mercenary streak in him possibly Man City

Thanks for dropping by edinho and yeah, I agree, I wanted to see Capel start. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Perotti on the right (seeing as he’s a natural right footer) and Capel on the left for a bit of a change. Konko was rubbish and Adriano is clearly a more solid wingback than him so it would have been nice to see Capel get the start.

SRH, I like your conspiracy theories lol, I doubt that’s the case but hey, you never know in football these days. I don’t see Perotti going anywhere, we’ll have him up and running next year. This summer will indeed be an interesting one (like it always is for us) and I cannot wait to see what happens. I’m pretty interested to see who we bring to the club.

Theo, to be quite honest I never really rated Villarreal as a solid side. As much as I love Cazorla, Senna and just their overall style of football, they’re just not a powerhouse and don’t consider them a huge threat to us. You’re right though, it’s still good to see us keeping clean sheets against some of the “strongest” teams in La Liga.

as others have said, I wasn’t that impressed with our play this weekend–I thought we looked a bit lost, or like we were lacking a unified strategy. having said that, though, almost everyone looks a bit silly after watching barcelona, and we’re at a point in the season now where we need results more than form. I feel like for the past month or so we’ve been a fighter who knows he can get a tko if he just makes it to the final bell. and then we’ll live to fight another day!

also, i’m enjoying hearing everyone’s thoughts on the upcoming summer transfer–it really should be a summer to remember for us!

    ¡a por ellos!

Don’t quote me/hold this against me in the future but you are absolutely correct with regards to the Lionel statement. He’s one of the rare testaments to the beauty of the game.

Also, pretty surprising that the name “Jesús Navas” and the term “man crush” were no where near at least 10 words in proximity to each other :D

Jeremy, we started shaky but once we got the goal, even after the sending off; we played well. We still lack that hunger and desire that the top sides in Europe seem to have when they step out on the pitch and I’m not sure if its the lack of confidence in the players by Jiménez or if its something else which happening behind the scenes but we just don’t have it yet. Ultimately that’s what’s stopping us from progressing as a secondary European side to one of Europe’s elite clubs.

Alexa, Jesús always will be my man crush but little Lionel just impressed me so much this weekend. He single handedly ran circles around the mierda.

    just a note.

we need 8 points to clinch CL spot. 9 points to clinch 3rd. id love to see them take all 12 and go out in style.

but interesting point about them not consistently having the hunger. i totally agree. they’ve showed occassional flashes, but then it abandons them when you least expect it (see copa del rey v. bilbao… wtf?). and i think your saying that was the most persuasive argument ive heard yet about needing a new coach. a coach needs to inspire confidence in the team and i just dont think that jimenez can do that…

    we’ll see.

not to turn this into a messi love-fest (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but what other world player of the year, assuming he wins, could be as humble and soft-spoken as lionel messi. kaka comes to mind, but seriously there’s nothing not to love about this guy. the “culo bajo” and all those quick feet, and at the highest level he’s the one lifting up his shirt with that message of compassion under it. he’s the youngest starter on the team. just so amazing. especially when you compare him to a true football diva like CR7. messi is the every-man’s star. VIVA MESSI.

SRH, I think 12 points is definitely do-able. Mallorca is under their own respective renaissance at the moment so we will have to approach that match with serious caution but since we’re at home I think we can take all three points. Osasuna is still struggling so that should be another three points there; We’ve beat Depor three times this year already and there’s no reason we couldn’t do it again. Last but not least at Numancia who seem to be the league whipping boys but none the less we’ll have to proceed with caution as we all know what happened when we took them lightly last time…

Jiménez just doesn’t strike me as the type of manager to inspire the squad. We need a Mourinho type character, one who is highly animated and goes out into the press and brags about our squad and how great we are. We definitely have a lot of talent but it seems we lack motivation.

Messi is the complete player on and off the pitch, he’s truly a football model for anyone.

anthony, you said what i was trying to get at much more articulately–we lack a killer instinct and consistent drive to win, more than a strategic mindset or identity. and SRH, exactly. that bilbao game was probably the hardest of the year to watch. it’s hard to feel like we, the fans, care more about the result than 90% of the people on the pitch, and that has happened too often this year.

having said that, though, i’m still not sure i want to see jimenez go. i’m not even a huge fan, to be honest, but i like that he’s from the youth program and that he’s currently our coach. i’d be on board to hire someone new if he’s already had success in a system similar to ours AND he’s without question a much better coach than jimenez. i don’t want to see a new coach come in and waste our young talent and team understanding and unity to install a new philosophy, and i don’t want to get some guy who’s been at 3 clubs in the last 5 years who just might be a great fit for us. we got lucky in that respect with ramos, but when he left we all knew we’d risked that when we hired him. and we’re too great a club to lose people that way. so i hope we keep jimenez until we have a definite improvement lined up. (and i know he’s as good as gone, i just hope that means we’ve got something great lined up.)

I’m mixed on emotion about the whole Jiménez situation too. I mean if we do bring someone in, it better be like you said – someone in for the long haul with the inspiration and motivation to push us above and beyond being “just another above average club”. I’ve heard several rumours surrounding the situation and think I’ll do a post at the end of the season when we kind of know what is going on about what options we have or at least who we’ve been linked to. Like you said though, I don’t want a guy who’s been at 3 clubs in 5 years and is just in it for the instant success. I want whoever it is to come in and not expect to win every piece of silverware right away, I want a guy who will come in and instill confidence in our squad and make success that much more sweet – when we achieve it.

I think Jimenez well stay if we get CL spots but after a couple more seasons unless he attracts some stars and we do even better hes going.
But he has been in the Sevilla machine since 2000 and led our reserves to the second division. So he knows the youth and becuase he’s been with youth so long i think hes learnt to value him so i think hes got a least one more season with sevilla.
And it sort of serves as proof of the calibre of him that know hes gone first team coach Sevilla Atetico are rooted to the bottom of the segunda although the fact that all their best players got moved up because of the injury crisis and some stayed(Perotti, Prieto and Crespo).

About Barca i think they’re gonna need new Centre Backs cos lets be honest Puyol’s is going (I’m Barca fans but it was always gonna happen)and i think a couple of solid defenders reasonably young but experienced players would really cement them as the best

navas’ goal was very nice, though seems like the gk possibly could’ve had it.

i was actually pretty impressed by kanoute’s penalty kick. i know you always expect the player to make those, but he sold his fake to the left PERFECTLY and the goalie bit, then placed his shot to right side JUST inside the post. gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous penalty kick.
