Three points, but still more work to be done
By: Anthony | September 25th, 2008Three points earned, and still hovering around the top of the table which is an extremely positive sign. Jímenez proved his critics wrong today after what was seen as a huge failure against Betis last weekend. Fielding arguably our strongest 11 against Espanyol, we handed them their first defeat 2-0.
Maresca conducted the orchestra while Duscher was the stand-in bodyguard so to speak. Fabiano had another wasteful night as he didn’t perform to his well capable ability we all know of. Speaking of wasteful, luckily for us so was Luis García when he missed a half open net in the first half which potentially was the turning point.
Maresca opened the scoring with the 57th minute header that started from a nice hookup between Mosquera and Navas (yes, odd indeed). The header was hit firmly against the post which then deflected off Kameni’s hand and into the net. Kanouté was subbed in the 82nd minute for Chevantón, and once again, Cheva made an impact right after coming on, by scoring in the 85th minute off a beautiful low cross by who else, Jesús Navas.
Despite this somewhat of an easy victory at home, there still seems to be a lot of work to do, especially going away to Atlético on Sunday. Defensively again we look a bit shakey, and the opposing strikers are open way too often for comfort. If Jímenez can sort those small things out, and we can contain Agüero, there should be no reason we can’t go into Madrid and defeat Atléti.
