The Goalkeeping Debate a.k.a. Attention Valencia!!!

By: Anthony | January 19th, 2009

Andrés Palop is one of the best goalkeepers in Spain, and probably in Europe. From his game winning goal against Shakhtar Donetsk which took us to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup two years ago and then his three penalties saved against Espanyol in the final of the Cup, he’s an all round class act. The problem is – he’s 34 years old. Now sure, a goalkeeper’s career is usually longer than one that plays out, just look at Van der Sar or Oliver Khan.

This however brought me to wonder a few things. After Javi Varas’ amazing performance this past weekend, it’s evident that we have a future star on our hands, but with Palop on the team its unlikely that he’ll see much action. Let’s face it, the only reason he did is because Andrés was suspended. He rose to the occasion though and saved the game for us, without him Numancia could have easily had 2 or 3 goals.

Palop has been the driving force behind both of our UEFA Cup victories, as well as our three other trophies we won in the past three years. He’s also Spain’s third choice keeper and although he didn’t play at the European Championships this past summer, he was a part of the squad and therefore was considered a part of the team that were victorious in Austria/Switzerland.

Palop was only considered to be an average goalkeeper while at Valencia because he was stuck behind Cañizares (remember him Valencia fans?). The moment he came to us however, he was class, he displayed what he always had, but never got a chance to show and that was his ability in goal. I don’t want this to happen with Varas. It’s hit us smack in the face, we can’t make the same mistake Valencia did, we have a future star on our cards.

Over the summer there was the whole Valencia saga in which Palop was rumoured to probably going back to his home town and playing for the club he started at and supported growing up. In the end Sevilla wanted 5 million Euros for him, about 2.5 million more than Valencia was willing to pay so the deal didn’t go through.

Although, now that I think of it, as much as I love Palop and appreciate everything he’s done for us, I’d like to see him sold. He’s getting a bit past his prime and I think it would be smart on the management’s part to get top value for him while they still can. It’s evident that we have a gem in Varas and I would hate to see him move on because of a lack of playing time. We saw this in the summer when we loaned out Italian International Morgan De Sanctis to Galatasaray of Turkey. He was a promising prospect but it was obvious that he wasn’t better than Palop, not yet anyway. Now with Varas showing how good of a keeper he is, it also makes me wonder how De Sanctis will fit into the squad once he returns to Nervión.

I was over at the Valencia offside and many of the posters there looked worried at their goalkeeping crisis and their lack of a strong keeper. Well guys, we have three suitable candidates, mind taking Palop, your prodigal son back from us?

@Anthony, I think I speak for many of my fellow Valencianistas when I say: hell yes mate, we’ll take him off your hands. Also, are you the coherent and brave Anthony speaking the truth on the Real Mierda blog? If so, I’m with you man. See you in the copa on Wednesday.

I love Palop and have absolutely nothing against him and I think I speak for all Sevillistas when I say we’re forever in debt to him for what he’s done for us and helped us achieve in recent years, but the time has come to move on. As a Valencia supporter you know all about Cañizares and Palop was always playing second fiddle until the point he came to us and showed the quality he possessed but never had a chance to prove. Like I said, I don’t want us to make the same mistake with Javi Varas who is obviously a very talented kid and has an amazing future ahead of him. We also have De Sanctis out on loan and between both of them I don’t think we’ll have a problem at all.

And yes thats me, 100% anti-Madridista. Real Mierda. Glad to see someone taking my side. All the best for Wednesday.

Hi Anthony! Im a Valencia fan and I agree with you that letting Palop go was a big mistake by our lovely management. I really think he is the 2nd best goalkeeper in Spain at the moment (after Casillas of course) and definitely world-class.

Ive watched the Numancia and Sevilla match and to be honest Javi Varas is really promising and seems to be better than our current goalkeepers at Valencia. If it werent for brave goalkeeping Sevilla would have lost that match by at least a 2 goal margin.

Its really impressive that your team has two very good goalkeepers. Sevilla is a definitely a good example of proper team management with limited funds.

Best of luck on Wed..And hope Kanoute gets to play (ive always respected him as a player even though he plays for a rival team).

Yeah Fayez, huge mistake on Valencia’s part but then again I guess you choose to ignore these things when you have a solid first choice keeper. No one thinks about the future, thats the problem, everything in football is about success now, not in a few years time.

Like I mentioned in the post, we also have a solid goalkeeper on loan to Galatasaray in Turkey so I mean we’re not short at the back, thats for sure.

Today should be a good match, I can’t wait, I’m happy Renan is injured because quite frankly (no offense) but your backup doesn’t look good and also Renan was the one that kept you in the game when we played you in the league earlier this year. Looks like big Freddie Kanouté won’t play tomorrow, or at least not start, he’s included in the squad but is still nursing a very slight injury, I think we’re saving him for the league when we travel to Santander this weekend.

Thanks for dropping by Fayez, hope to see you around again.

Shaun, I really think it’s important that we let the mierda know what we think of them, its so obviously the matches are indirectly fixed in one way or another, at least the refereeing anyway. Of course they’re completely oblivious to it, but I think they choose to be. Also we wouldn’t be “giving” Palop to you, everything has it’s price ;)
