Taking the Positives out of the Negative

By: Anthony | November 9th, 2008

On a night of a horrible display of football you have to dig deep to find the positives, if you saw the match you would know just how deep you have to dig…

We went into our match with fellow Andalucians Recreativo de Huelva having lost four matches straight and were looking to get what looked at one time to be a dream season back on track. The first half was absolutely abysmal and I do not wish to comment any further on it, quite frankly it was embaressing for the club and everything we stand for. I really cannot explain how bad it was I mean there was no passion, no speed, no intensity, no flare, no skill, no nothing, worst half of fútbol I’ve ever seen in my life, just plain boring to watch.

After what I’m assuming was an extremely strict briefing at half time by Manolo Jiménez we came out flying showing the true Sevilla that Europe has come to know and love. The introduction of Diego Capel who came on for the slow and out of place Romaric caused an immediate effect and we were absolutely dominating the match. It’s funny that I didn’t even consider Capel much of a loss when Adriano was on top form but now after today’s match I see just how much his quickness and pace causes havoc amongst any opponents, and how much we have actually missed him during the past few weeks. It wasn’t long, sixty third minute to be exact, before we scored. It all started with a beautiful run by Adriano who played a quick few passes with Navas whom which eventually played in a perfect ball as always to the Malian giant, Kanouté who headed home a beautiful goal. It only took fifteen minutes more for Capel to get fouled in the Huelva box and therefore we were awarded a penalty. Kanouté calmly jogged up like he always does, hit a bullet, but unfortunately the man of the hour placed it just a bit too close to the Recreativo keeper and the score stayed at 1-0. From then on the match was an extremely nervy one from a Sevillista perspective but in the end we held on with some key saves by Palop to secure the 3 points and out first win in 5 matches including all competitions.

All in all it was an extremely negative match with nothing really special about it but in times like these you have to look at the positives no matter how impossible it might seem. Some good notes are as follows: Diego Capel is back in the lineup, a huge boost for the team. My boy Tom de Mul came on as a sub today for Adriano and also had an immediate impact as he caused alot of trouble for the Recreativo defense along his right wing, good to see him getting some minutes in. Final positive of today, and also an extremely important point is that we finally won, what seemed like an eternity is finally here and from this we need to put together a streak of wins and hopefully get out of the “Jornadas of death” with four wins (yes I do expect a lot, because quite frankly we’re more than capable).

We now look ahead to Thursday when we take on SD Ponferradina at home in the return leg of the Copa del Rey, on in which we have to win by 2 goals so secure our place in the next round. Hopefully today’s match was the start of something good and if we can work on a few minor things here and there we should be back to our best form in no time.
