Starting Early; Our Transfer Targets this Summer

By: Anthony | May 28th, 2009

We really don’t waste time in Nervión. Maybe it’s all the excitement over qualifying for next year’s Champions League or maybe it’s just good time management on our part; whatever it is, all I know is that Monchi has already made it clear of who he wants to acquire in the summer transfer window.

Our infamous sporting director Monchi has come out and said he is going to aim to sign 4 targets during the upcoming summer months in preparation for next season and our quest in the Champions League. Anyone who watched us this season could clearly tell that we still have a long way to go before we can consider ourselves challengers for the league because we just don’t have the depth that Barcelona and Real Madrid do. We also don’t have the massive budgets that they do to splurge out on Europe’s top superstars and all things considered, we’re doing all right.

All right isn’t good enough anymore as we aim to solidify our place as one of Spain’s best teams and during the summer transfer window it is pretty clear that we need to bring in some key additions to continue pushing up the table and show that we’re here to stay, not just for a visit. Monchi has been known over the years to find the best undiscovered talent around the world but now that teams everywhere have much better scouting, our sporting director feels that we have some competition and will therefore go for proven but reasonably priced talent.

Our Main Target – Jesús Gámez:
He has been one of the main reasons that Málaga has performed so well this season and is definitely one of the most sought after right-backs in Spain right now. This transfer will be anything but straight forward though as Málaga had apparently already rejected an offer from us this past January worth €3.5m and an unnamed player as well as a €4.5m offer from Valencia. Jesús has made it clear that he would welcome a move to the red side of the Andalucían capital and play in the Champions League. Joseba Diaz, Gámez’ agent also said, “There is nothing concrete, but I would love to see Jesús leave for Sevilla”.

It’s been clear since Alves left last summer that we have struggled terribly to find a suitable replacement at right back with the capabilities that Dani had. Mosquera and Konko have been less than convincing this past season and for a team who wants to do well domestically and in Europe you must have a solid defense. I guess that does sound ridiculous considering we have the second best defensive record in the whole league only behind league winners Barcelona but at the same time, we require sharper talent; Mosquera and Konko are not Champions League quality footballers. Gámez does well when pushing up and is also solid defensively which is similar to Alves and his style of play.

A side note which is actually really important in my eyes is the fact that he is Spanish. No, I’m not racist by any means but I see us bringing in more and more foreigners when we are located in a country overflowing with talent and I think it is always good to have as much homegrown talent in the squad as possible.

Málaga are asking any possible suitors for cash but it is clear that they will need players since they have several playing for them only on loans which expire this summer. One of those player’s is our very own Duda who plays on either the right or left flank. It’s obvious that in Jesús Navas, Diego Capel, Adriano, and Diego Perotti, we have possibly the best flank men in all of La Liga and Duda would clearly be a surplus to requirements. That’s not even mentioning Tom de Mul who is on loan at Racing Genk for the end of this season and will also be re-joining us soon. Another player of ours who is currently on loan at Málaga is Lolo and the former Sevilla Atlético youth product has also been a vital part behind the success of our Andalucían neighbours making 26 appearances this season and scoring 4 goals playing in a defensive midfield position. Two players who would struggle to find playing time in Nervión could definitely be used as makeweight in the deal for our target Gámez and it’s hard to see what Málaga would do without them.

Other Targets
Swiss International Gökhan Inler was said to be one of the players Monchi was looking to bring in during previous window’s and now he looks to step up his pursuit in order to finally clinch a deal. The now Udinese man plays as a central midfielder and is a Poulsen-esque type player who we still have yet to find since the Dane’s departure to Juventus last summer.

Another central midfielder our scouts are apparently monitoring is Stéphane M’Bia who currently plays his league football for Rennes in France. Their sporting director Pierre Dreossi has acknowledged that M’Bia could very well leave this summer when he stated yesterday “M’Bia is the only player we are willing to let out this summer if there is a good offer, for the moment that has not occurred.”

There is one more player who Monchi said he is following but preferred to keep him unnamed for the time being. Whoever we sign I am definitely looking forward to new faces around the camp because we definitely need to freshen things up a bit and add depth to the squad to create competition within.

Let’s hope Monchi can work his magic like he so often has done before.

I think Lolo could be a new star for us since we’ll soon need new CM because Maresca is 29 and might leave anyway if we’re to believe goal.com. Renato is 30 and so is duscher. So Romaric is our only CM who wont soon need replacing. Anthony as you keep saying we need more depth to challenge the Mierda and Barca so selling rising stars won’t help our cause. I think if we keep Lolo sell Duda and keep an eye on our youth we could in 5-10 years challenge for the title. About Barcelona they dont splash out millions the way the Mierda do, look at Messi he came in at 13 and stayed with them and many of their main players are products of youth (iniesta, xavi, puyol) but they do have the money to splash out on Henry and Eto’o €24 million each if wikipeedia is right.

    i’d forgotten about this:

    http://sport.es/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=44&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=616559&idseccio_PK=803

maybe that can help our offer to málaga? haha, i’m glad barca won anyway, but that just makes their victory a little sweeter! (summary: bc of barca’s success this year, sevilla gets an additional 2.25 million euros for the sale of alves.)

and theo–i love your longview, thinking in terms of building for success in 5-10 years. long-term consistency is more important to me than success now. hiring and firing coaches every year, financial ruin, and struggling every year to just barely make it to european play after starting the decade with consecutive CL finals appearances and a liga championship must sting that much more for valencia (for example). let’s build slowly, and always for the future.

    so excited for our team!

I agree with you Jeremy. That’s a great point in regards to the short-term success of Valencia. I’d also like to see Sevilla build slowly, so we could establish ourselves as a big club. Perhaps “The Big Three”, as Valencia are looking to fall off that pedestal.

In terms of our transfer targets, I’ve heard great things about Stéphane M’Bia. And I’ll admit, I have a soft spot for those hard-tackling African central midfielders. I also think that we need another CB. We’ve been suspect in the air this season, especially during set-pieces. Maybe another striker wouldn’t hurt either? Kanouté, and maybe even Koné, will be going to the African Cup of Nations next winter. And if we’ll still be in the Copa del Rey, it’ll be tough playing twice a week with only Luis Fabiano, injury-prone Chevanton, and Lautaro Acosta. All in all, I’m looking forward to Monchi’s signings.

I think you guys should look into Kallstrom of Lyon. He’s playing great for us, albiet at left back lately. He’s actually developed a little defensive skill and may be developing into a full-fledged box-to-box midfielder; well, he can’t play on the right. Anyway, I hate to lose him, but hope you guys renew last year’s interest in him.

I absolutely love Kallstrom, especially that left foot of his. It was very hard watching him play left-back due to that full-back crisis Lyon had. But we all know doing business with Lyon is difficult. It was hard enough signing Squillaci. In regards to midfielders though, I think Monchi’s looking for a more defensive-minded CM.

I agree with you guys (edinho and John) about Kallstrom, I would love to see him in Sevilla and think he would be a great asset to our team. In terms of what Monchi is looking for, well, I think at this point we need both a defensive midfielder as well as an attacking minded midfielder like a Kallstrom-type player. Duscher, Romaric and Renato haven’t given us Sevillistas anything too “ooh and ahh” about this season and if anything haven’t produced the goods we need them to. You could argue that I’m being a bit harsh since Renato has the second most goals overall on the team behind Kanouté but he’s very inconsistent and just not a game changing player like we need.

Another striker is a must considering exactly what John mentioned – this season we’ve played several (okay, maybe not several, but far too many) with only one fit striker. We need another big man like Kanouté up top who can play alongside Fabiano, Koné, Chevantón (if he’s even ever fit next season) or Acosta.

In regards to consistency – I definitely agree. If we don’t win anything (silverware) next year but improve on this season’s finish I’ll be content knowing that we are progressing. I would rather build slowly and surely rather than pull a Celta Vigo or Leeds United (for any of you that know about English football).

Edinho: I think Kallstrom has developed alot of defensive skill playing LB. At the beginning of the season, he was atrocious at that position and gave-up a ton of goals in the league and the CL for Lyon- Gilardinno bagged a couple of goals off of crosses from the left side. But, Kim has put in some stunning peformances as of late in defense, and I’ve never played the game, but imagine that he might have some skill as a DM. But you do need someone, especially since I read Maresca in on the way out; Kim will definately give you offensive firepower with fine passing.
As for some good DMs that are available- sorry, I only watch the French league, aside from Sevilla- are St. Etienne’s Blaise Matuidi. He’s a solid DM, but I think Arsenal have been after him for some time, so he’s sure to be expensive. And I also like Toulouse FC’s Etienne Capoue and Le Mans’ Mathieu Coutadeur, two very good, young and cheap DMs. For offense, Toulouse’s Moussa Cissoko is and excellent RMF/CMF.

Anthony, what were the negotations for Squillaci like? I know Aulas is a hard, pain-in-the-ass negotiator, but the deal happened so fast, I didn’t think there was a problem. And you guys got a steal in Toto. 6.5 for a French NT CB with his talent? He was our best defender. We payed 8.5 for John Mensah, and he’s spent 80% of the time injured. My eyes water when I see Toto and Kanoute not in OL kits; only thing that makes me sader is Essien.

Negotiations for Squillaci were fairly straight forward from what I understand. There was a bit of trouble agreeing on his pricetag at first but it was done and dusted within about 2 weeks. The thing with Monchi and Del Nido is that they make transfers public when it’s to our advantage (Dani Alves & Christian Poulsen) but keep out targets under the radar (Squillaci, Romaric, Acosta etc..) until within about a week of completing the deal. So taking that into consideration, the Squillaci deal may have been more complicated than it appeared.
