Sporting Gijón 1-0 Sevilla; “Time to Panic”

By: Anthony | February 1st, 2009

It definitely is, what an embarrassment. For the second time in as many weeks we’ve been up a man for the majority of the game and not only lost, but failed to score a single goal. There’s a serious crisis in Nervión now, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens but one thing I know for sure is this is unacceptable.

For a team that started the year so promising and was regarded as one of the only teams that would probably challenge for the title we’ve quickly fallen way off the pace.

Now after that defeat to minnows Sporting Gijón we still sit in third place, luckily Villarreal got hammered by Depor so we have a “comfortable” position in the Champions League spots. Although, the way we’ve been playing lately, nothing with us can be considered “comfortable”. This is the most erratic Sevilla side I’ve ever seen and although I was quick to jump to Jiménez’ defense before, there’s no way I can anymore, his tactics are so conservative and strange that he’s stripped Sevilla of the quality attacking football we were known and renowned for.

Like my buddy Aaron pointed out, at the beginning of the season our goal was to qualify for Champions League which we’re currently in line to do so Jiménez can’t be criticized like he is being right now, he’s also taken us to the Copa del Rey semis which we will play this Wednesday against Bilbao who have been in stunning form of late. If we don’t get our act together we’ll go crashing out of the Copa just like in UEFA.

I think it’s that the expectations surrounding our team have been heightened ever since having that extremely successful spell in which we won a record 5 trophies in 15 months. It should be obvious though that any team to lose after being up a man for over 65 minutes is extremely embarrassing and considering it’s now happened twice in as many games, there’s an obvious problem.

There were a few positive points today though, they were hard to come by but I managed to recall a few. Palop once again like he’s done so many times in his career saved a bullet of a penalty from Mate Bilic which gave us hope in the first half, unfortunately, about 5 minutes after this Sporting scored. Also in the second half Lautaro Acosta made his official return from a rather lengthy injury when he substituted on for the inefficient Chevantón who just hasn’t been the same ever since he’s come back from injury. Acosta almost found the back of the net on a couple occasions and I’m looking really forward to him playing a lot more in the near future as he’s a really promising young talent. Also Fazio returned from his lengthy spell on the injury table and even though he wasn’t a standout performer today, he made very few mistakes and was a solid defensive midfielder.

The starting lineup today was:
Palop
Crespo – David Prieto – Escudé – Drago
Duscher – Fazio
Jesús Navas – Romaric – Diego Capel
Chevantón

Once again a very defensive lineup away from home to a team that has a very erratically high goals for ratio. Jiménez obviously didn’t do his homework and we were punished for it today. I don’t understand the need for two defensive midfielders when Duscher can play the role by himself in a diamond midfield formation. Also Chevantón cannot play as a single striker because he’s small and quick, he needs a target man to play alongside or at least another guy to play off of, Acosta and him should have started since both Kanouté an Luis Fabiano are nursing slight knocks. Big Fredi did come on in the second half but appeared to be playing a more creative, play-making role, mind boggling stuff, I was so lost. It appeared to be too late, and he didn’t affect the game in any dramatical way. Diego Capel and Jesús Navas both looked lively as always and of course that’s a good sign.

All in all we played very poor football and couldn’t even penetrate one of the weakest defenses in the league, also factor in that they were a man down and it’s even worse on our part. This is seriously becoming annoying considering the ability I know we have in this squad and how we can perform when we really want to.

We now travel back home to Nervión to train and prepare for our Wednesday encounter with Athletic Club de Bilbao in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals. I’ve said it a million times this year but this is an absolute must win game, if we lose then Jiménez can kiss his ass goodbye and we should be expecting a new manager in Sevilla really soon, some rumours suggest Michael Laudrup who is currently at Spartak Moscow. We will need to win by a significant margin because going into San Mames and expecting a result is risky because this is like a sanctuary to Athletic and very few teams can go in there and come out with anything to show for.

let’s watch the copa and la liga over the next two weeks to determine just how panicky we should be getting. now, i’m as frustrated as anyone is i’m sure with our form of late (although, disregarding 2 absolute gifts to valencia, we would have defeated them twice in one week). we’ve got betis and espanyol up in the liga and two matches with atletic. we should (hard to even use that word anymore) be able to win both liga matches, and i’d still bet on us taking out bilbao.

it seems like the players haven’t been getting after it as much this year as in recent years either (exceptions clearly being navas and capel). maybe losing out of the UEFA cup so fast kind of sapped them of their fire for this season, but i hope that after two straight liga defeats they will find some grit and really come out determined to show something. and what could make this club more ‘apasionado’ than the derby? so here’s to hoping for a better next couple weeks. vamos mi sevilla!

I think that struggling against two considerably weaker teams when we have one extra man for more than half of both games is enough reason to start panicking.

I agree though, let’s see what happens in the Copa and more importantly in the derby. I’m not sure what it is about the players, both Kanouté and Fabiano haven’t been nearly as good as last season and like you pointed out, only Navas and Capel have been up to and above par.

Whatever the problem may be, Jiménez better solve it fast because he’ll be the first to go if the results keep going this way.

im very torn on this. we are not in a bad position in the table. we are in the semi finals of the copa del rey. but i just can’t manage to comprehend how we can’t beat a recently promoted team playing with only ten players…

again in defense of jimenez, how can we not score with 20 shots?!?! and you have to then sympathize with the fact that injuries have crushed our strikers and acosta and chevanton have not recovered their form…

i think im most frustrated though with the opening defensive lineup. we NEVER play well when we sit back and try to eek out 1-0 games. we always play much better moving forward, and the lineup from the startup of the game did not allow us to do so. that said, you can’t fault him for the changes he made bringing on two more strikers and renato. though the actual tactics (not just the substitutions) are still questionable.

if things dont get better soon, id be willing to turn the page on the jimenez era. but i’d give him a couple liga games and this round of the copa del rey to try and right the ship first.

im keeping my fingers crossed that he does.

sorry to invade your blog, i’m a valencianista as u may remember, but i don’t think it’s time to panic. you’re in third place! one point above my beloved valencia. you’re not playing that great at the moment, but lacking fabiano amidst the fact that all teams struggle, i don’t think you have reason to panic.

SRH, I think it’s that the extremely high expectations coming into the season haven’t exactly helped our cause because any other team in the league (bar Barça) would be more than happy with our record. I’m still obviously pissed that we lost to Racing and Sporting when we were up a man for more than half the game in both but I guess I have to look at the positives; we’re third in the table, and in the semi’s of the Copa.

The problem with Jiménez’ substitutes are that they come too late, these players should be starting, not coming on in the 70th minute or whatever, we want consistent pressure on the opposing team throughout the game.

I think he’ll get till the end of the year and after that depending on where we finish in the table and in the Copa will reflect his job status.

Timothy, one of the problems this season has actually been Fabiano, he’s been terribly inconsistent and not like he was last year. I don’t think it’s made that big of a difference but then again maybe if he played every game it would allow him to get more into the swing of things.

i can’t believe it’s being debated how awful the foul on capel was that got (someone) a straight red. the tackle was a.) cleats up, b.) with two feet, c.) straight into capel’s ankle, d.) from behind. all of those four on their own are worthy of yellow cards, but all four together??? that’s some serious “conlleva suspensión” right there.

I know man, it’s seriously a joke, even if Diego did put in a bit of a Oscar winning performance (he usually does), there is no doubt that it was an extremely rash tackle. No need for that kind of stuff in the game, does Eduardo ring any bells?
