Sevilla v Espanyol Preview – Saturday, 4PM GolTV

By: Anthony | October 24th, 2009

04-SevillaFC-Mallorca 04It seems like just yesterday we were facing off against an Espanyol side who was considered one of Europe’s strongest sides who handled their business under the radar. That legendary match two years ago in Hampden Park where we needed penalties to triumph is definitely one for the ages but much has changed since then. Espanyol is no longer that side who is considered when speaking of European competition but rather a very mediocre La Liga mid-table one.

Of course nothing can be taken for granted in La Liga seeing as it is the best league in the world but let’s make one thing clear – anything less than three points at home today will be a massive disappointment.

Coming off a midweek triumph in Europe will undoubtedly add to our confidence but at the same time we have to be careful because success is a dangerous thing. We saw what happened after we beat Real; we came back from the international break and got shot back down to reality by Depor.

What will make this an even more difficult task is the amount of absences we will have from our regular squad and starting XI. We have several key players out due to illness, knocks picked up against Stuttgart midweek and longer term injuries as well. It’s funny how just a bit over a week ago I was saying how Manolo has a selection headache because of how well everyone was playing, but now it seems like he’ll have a selection headache for a whole other reason.

The biggest blow to us is that both Luis Fabiano and Ivica Dragutinovic will be out due to viral infections as will Frédéric Kanouté due to a minor knock he picked up midweek against Stuttgart which he has been unable to fully recover from. Adriano will also be out of the squad for what is projected to be about a month as he limped off in Germany due to a pulled muscle. Last but not least, Andrés Palop will remain out of the squad due to his minor injury meaning Javi Varas will start his third consecutive match.

Due to all these injuries a few call ups have been made to the squad including Manuel Redondo, José Carlos and last but not least, Chevantón. Yes, I said it – CHEVA.

He used to be a personal favourite of mine as he would always come on and score – he was like the ultimate supersub. Obviously with the competition we have up front this year he is struggling to see minutes on the pitch and rightfully so but now is a good a time as any to prove his worth. Injuries never really helped his cause as when he would get an opportunity to play, he often got injured and wouldn’t play again till weeks later. Having said all this, he probably will not start or possibly even play at all as I expect Negredo to start up top alongside Koné.

It will be very interesting indeed to see how Jiménez assembles our starting XI tonight with so many key players out. Just so you have an idea of who you might see tonight, the squad will look something like this:
Javi Varas, Dani Jiménez, Konko, Sergio Sánchez, Squillaci, Lolo, Escudé, Fernando Navarro, Redondo, Zokora, Duscher, Renato, Romaric, José Carlos, Navas, Capel, Perotti, Chevantón, Koné, Negredo.

Even with this squad I believe we have the depth to come away with all three points. With our passionate fans behind us for 90 minutes, we should expect nothing less than a victory at home.

¡¡VAMOS MI SEVILLA!!

its a tough set of injuries, but if this team wants to be a serious contender it has to pick up wins even when missing key players. i hope that kone gets the start. mostly because i dont want to see manolo revert to a one striker form which he did when there were injuries last year. this team can control the game and attack and generate goals, but does it best with two strikers up top. crossing my fingers to see both kone and negredo out there.

    lets go sevilla!!!

Another match to test the strength of our squad. Espanyol are undefeated in 5 games. Should be a great match. C’mon Negredo! C’mon Sevilla!

    shit. couldn’t finish.

this is exactly why i said i was concerned we would play with a single striker. it NEVER works out well for us… rrrrrrr….

though kone looked pretty sloppy once he did come on and so im not sure what our options really were.

i was talking to aaron during the game, and we agreed with you, SRH–the one striker system was going to cost us. and then it did. especially in the first 30 minutes, we really could have used another body up front while they were doing well just to clear the ball.

i guess it’s karma for winning despite not dominating at midweek. and for that matter i’m glad we didn’t lose 3-1 despite our superiority.

but damn, that was frustrating and exhausting to watch. we will miss those 2 points. (duh).

madrid down to 10 men at 30′. if they drop points today (likely), three points from what should be one of the easiest games we’ll see all year in la liga would see us even or a point behind madrid (just as their crisis deepens). A POR ELLOS!

Greetings from the Valencia blog. I have created a La Liga forum (in English) on my website and everyone is free to join. My website is a Valencia CF news site, but the forum itself is for all La Liga teams, Each team has their own seperate forum. I look forward to seeing as many different fans from as many different teams as possible.

wow, so much for that. getafe looked just absolutely toothless in the second half. i think madrid could have had one or two more sent off their back line and still just let casillas handle whatever got through.

now as i look a the table i’m thinking more about valencia and depor behind us than madrid ahead of us. come on now, let’s get a w today!

It’s easy to say this in hindsight, but let’s hope Jiménez learns to use his substitutions wisely. Using up all 3 with a half-hour left to play, while we’re still up a goal, isn’t the most safe of situations, and really made things awkward against Stuttgart. Either way, we’re into the knockout stages, which is what really matters. But had we clinched top spot, we certainly could’ve benefited from those 2 remaining games play our fringe players. Moving on to this weekend, it looks like we’re facing Villarreal at the wrong time, who’ve just come off of a 5-0 victory over Tenerife, and a 4-1 win over Lazio. It definitely sets up a good game though.

a bit nervous for the game tomorrow. sevilla havent been dominating like they were earlier and villareal are certainly playing with some confidence right now. hopefully we get a lift being at home, we can get an early goal and villareal will revert to their prior poor form… but this strikes me as a dangerous game. should be a good test.

    go sevilla!

wow! didnt get to see the match but sounds like it was awesome. even better than i had hoped. villareal proved that they are back, and we STILL beat them!

    woohoo! go sevilla!

sounds like adriano was a HUGE difference maker to have back.

and congrats to navas for the call up!!!

um…. GREAT WIN! i was really scared for us. it looked like we couldn’t find our play at all during a lot of the first half, and for the first 10-15 of the second. but as soon as fabiano got his second goal, we ran away with the match from the 61st minute on.

well deserved. shows that even if we don’t play our best for 90′ we can still take down one of the better teams in la liga with the talent we have.

I think we could also thank Villarreal for their bad defending. I never knew missing Gonzalo would hurt them so much. But I gotta give credit to Fabiano’s determination. And how about that Adriano substitution! Glad to have him back. He was definitely our most improved player last season, and now he’s still showing how great of an asset he can be.

After the international, we have a good run of “easy” games. Let’s hope we won’t drop anymore points till the winter break, where things’ll get interesting.

Also want to say congrats to Navas for the call-up as well. We need some more representation in the national team. And secondly, Anthony, did the dropped points against Espanyol upset you that much?! Can’t wait to have you back buddy! :)

    Atletico up next in copa.

great to see them put on a butt whooping. hopefully we can keep up our focus for these relatively easier matches over the next few weeks and get into one of our dominant high flying rhythms going into the winter break…

just great seeing them play so well.

add a congratulations to Perotti for his call up as well!

on a happier note, a good sevilla showing in madrid today: at the end of the spain-argentina game we had perotti, negredo, and navas on. love it!

well… i read somewhere (forgetting where) that fabiano was carried off on a stretcher after knocking heads with someone. but i cant find any follow up mention of it, not the sevilla blog (the spanish one), nor any other news site. so im hoping he just bonked heads, it was all precautionary, and he’s fine… though my fingers are still crossed.

btw. anthony! how you doin buddy? we miss you! do you ever want help writing posts? i couldnt do half as good a job as you, but if i saw that you hadnt written for a while, id be glad to drop in a paragraph or two placeholder from time to time just to keep things rolling on here. its fun when there’s more content and more discussion. hope you’re doing well.
