Sevilla v Deportivo la Coruña Preview; ¡Adios!
By: Anthony | May 23rd, 2009
We’ll be saying goodbye to a lot of things today, some fortunately and others, not so much. Two things we’ll unfortunately be saying goodbye to are the fans because this is out last home game of the year and also to our former captain and legend Javi Navarro who officially retired earlier this week but will be present at the game tomorrow. One thing we can say goodbye to are Depor’s European aspirations when we smash them like we have three previous times this season alone.
Today will mark the fourth time we’ve played Depor this season in which we’ve won the previous three matches. We knocked them out of the Copa del Rey with victories both home and away and also in the reverse of this fixture when we came out of A Coruña with a 1-3 victory.
So sure, we’ve had Deportivo’s number this year but this match means a lot to both sides so it won’t be as simple as we may have hoped for. We’re still looking to secure that third spot for direct qualification to the Champions League while Deportivo are looking for a European place of their own, except in the Europa League but also a very slim chance of getting into that fourth spot.
This match will be our last played at home this season and nothing would be nicer than going out in style with an emphatic victory over a solid Depor side. On a night where our beloved ex-captain Javi Navarro will receive a retirement award before the match, we should show the confidence and hunger which he inspired during his time with the team.
Last Minute Updates:
• Kanouté did briefly struggle this week with his fitness but trained normally on Thursday and Friday so he will most likely start today.
• Romaric is suspended for today’s match after getting sent off last week.
• Chevantón makes his return to the squad after being sidelined for most of the season with a knee injury.
The official squad for tomorrow’s match:
Palop, Javi Varas, Konko, Adriano, Squillaci, Escudé, Dragutinovic, Crespo, Fernando Navarro, Maresca, Renato, Duscher, Jesús Navas, Perotti, Diego Capel, Luis Fabiano, Koné, Chevantón and Kanouté.
A win today would solidify us in third place and also allow us to say goodbye to our home fans and know that they can go home happy. We haven’t exactly been convincing at home this season but if Kanouté and Fabiano can link up like they have in recent weeks I can’t see the Depor defense keeping up with us.

Hi Anthony. I write on the Lyon blog. I’ve recently become a Sevilla fan; only natural since you end up getting most of our players and alot of L1/French talent as well. Was wondering if you know of any solid transfer rumors for the summer as well as which spots you think you need upgrading/will be recruiting for.

Thanks for dropping by John and it’s good to see more and more people becoming Sevilla fans, even if it isn’t exactly for the ideal reasons. We’ve been linked to many players over the past couple months specifically with the names of Udinese midfielder Gokhan Inler, Herenveen midfiedler Danijel Pranjic, and Hamburg defender Alex Silva being thrown around.
I wouldn’t say any of these are solid except the Inler one which goes back to last summer after he impressed at the Euros and we became interested.
As for the spots we need upgrading – Well it’s quite evident that we need a solid right wingback, Konko and Mosquera haven’t been good enough this year and for a team which is trying to go into the Champions League with hopes of progressing far, this isn’t satisfactory enough. I’d also like to personally see a solid attacking midfielder as I don’t really rate Renato or Romaric as a solution to that problem. Acosta may be good in a few years but we need a distributer in the middle to get Kanouté and Fabiano the service they need.
Hope that helped!

Someone with a good number of points is going to be relegated. And, while my mood is actually being affected (i.e. up with tension, down with glee) by the run of form that Osasuna and Sporting are showing, I really do feel bad for whatever the third relegated team will be. No, you hijos de, Betis will stay up by the hair of their chinny chin chin.
I wonder if my former piece of facha pension-mate is celebrating Sevilla’s return to the Champions League? Probably. Never liked that dude! You, Anthony, seem to be okay.

Ask me if I feel bad for you guys Kent, please do! All kidding aside though, you’re right – someone with a good number of points is going down and you should definitely be worried considering what Osasuna and Sporting have recently done in the league. A SEGUNDA O E!!

didn’t get to catch the game, but very glad to see us wrap up CL with a game to spare. much better than eking it out over atlético on the last day, and WAY better than getting eked out on the last day BY atlético (CABRONES!). for that matter, i wouldn’t mind seeing villareal nip them next week!

Actually, and aside from all the absurd results this year (e.g. losing to Barca at last moment, failing to earn points in countless games with leads late, that mess of a game last month vs. Numancia, and on and on and on), the “real” problem for a mediocre Betis right this moment (i.e. they’ve done okay for themselves the last couple of weeks) is the collective rolling over of Sevilla and We-have-to-rest-everyone-Barca to Osasuna. Still, that late goal by Concrete-aga and our hitting the post TWICE, really hurt last weekend.
Are the odds on Betis being relegated? No, a home game, vs. Fachadolid, and ALL the other results have to go away from them (e.g Osasuna has to WIN, Getafe has to WIN, Sporting has to WIN, and Betis has to LOSE). Is this likely? No, it’s not. But in this crazy league, anything can happen…like Betis can beat Sevilla at Sanchez Pee-juan…that happened, remember? So, crazier things have happened, but I still think they’ll stay up.
The real problem is Duende De Lopera. As long as he’s around, Betis are the La Liga equivalent of the Oakland Raiders.
Musho Betis.
