Sevilla v Depor Copa del Rey Preview – Wednesday 3pm GolTV

By: Anthony | January 7th, 2009

So we go into today’s match against SuperDepor with some extremely low morale. We’re gained an amazing two points against the two bottom teams in league play. Today however is not a league match, it is the Copa del Rey. Obviously us at Sevilla are hoping for somewhat of a renaissance due to the recent disappointing performances in the league and of course our crash out of Europe.

However I’m not getting my hopes up too high. Depor has been in my opinion the biggest revelation of the season currently sitting in sixth place and playing some amazing football. This match actually holds more significance than just a win at home and hopefully set the pace to advance in the Copa. But this is actually our first out of three matches against Deportivo in one week, twice in the Copa and one league match in between. A win today would see us hopefully start to pick our game up, give us that much needed boost of confidence to go on and snatch another win on Saturday when we travel to A Coruña and look to get our league record back on track. Any match against Depor is a tricky fixture, they play some extremely attacking and exciting football, but also have a solid defense and defensive midfield. They may be hard to break down and that is why Jiménez has called up the strongest possible lineup for tonight’s match.

The Copa del Rey is a complicated competition. Not the format or anything, but actually playing in it. It’s played over 180 minutes and the first game tonight especially since it’s at home is crucial. We saw last year what happened when we took on a Barca side who drew us 1-1 at home and when we went to the Camp Nou we drew with them 0-0. Barca advanced in the competition because of their away goals but were by no means the better team. I can’t emphasize enough how important tonight’s match is, we need to win, but not just a win, goal differential and also keeping a clean sheet.

Tonight’s squad is Javi Varas, Crespo, Fernando Navarro, Squillaci, Escude, David Prieto, Adriano, Romaric, Duscher, Renato, Maresca, Jesús Navas, Capel, Luis Fabiano y Kanouté.

Also, some good news as it is said both Acosta and Chevantón are both back to full training and should return to the squad by the first week of February. Both these players are crucial because over the past couple months we have been struggling to score, we need as much attacking presence in the squad as we can get.
