Sevilla v Barcelona Spanish Supercup Preview
By: Anthony | August 14th, 2010
Tomorrow we face our first major test of the 2010-2011 campaign before the league has even begun! We face off against Barcelona in the Supercopa de España as last season’s Copa del Rey winners. As we all know, Barça were La Liga Champions and arguably the best team in Europe. Both us and Barça have won this competition once in the past 3 years and will be looking to do so for the second time in four seasons starting tomorrow.
While there is no question about who has the stronger squad, there is a little bit more significance to this game than just any other match between us. Nothing can be taken for granted in two-legged affairs like this Supercopa one as just this past season we eliminated the mighty Barça from the Copa del Rey which obviously we eventually went on to win. Also, of course of recent our once star left-back, Adriano Correia was transferred to the Catalàn club just like Dani Alves and Seydou Keita in previous years. No doubt there will be a little bit of friendly competition amongst Adriano and his new squad with his former teammates.
One thing that must be noted is the fact that we are just coming off a week where there were many international friendlies played and having the superstar squad that Barça does, it must be expected that fatigue may be a factor. This could obviously work in our favour as even Victor Valdés has to play due to an injury Pinto is struggling to recover from despite having just returned to training from his summer vacation. Having said all that though, unfortunately Álvarez will have to contemplate very carefully what lineup he plays as we have a very important Champions League game on Wednesday against Portuguese side Braga.
Despite coming off a somewhat of a disappointing loss to Espanyol in the Trofeo Carranza which was decided in penalties, this is a totally different match which a much greater reward. Three points are absolutely crucial if we have serious aspirations of adding another trophy to our cabinet. Going to the Camp Nou with nothing will be very difficult for us to achieve a result.
The 18 man squad selected by Álvarez is as follows; Palop, Javi Varas, Konko, Dabo, Fazio, Squillaci, Escude, Renato, Cigarini, Romaric, Zokora, Navas, Alfaro, Perotti, Diego Capel, Negredo, Kanoute and Luis Fabiano. With all the recent paper talk about LuFa going to Olympique Marseille its a huge personal concern about how well our star striker will play and if he does if it will be his last match in the colours of Sevilla. Players left out of the lineup due to injury or who are not fit, are Fernando Navarro, Lolo, Cala, Luna, José Carlos, Rodri, and the injured Guarente and Acosta.
With both teams set to be missing a few players tomorrow it is really anyone’s match. Barça will come out strong as usual but depending on the players that Guardiola has at his disposal, we may just have the upper hand. I am excited to see just how well our new signings Luca Cigarini and Mouhamadou Dabo perform against the strongest team in La Liga; hopefully they patch up the holes we had last season in both midfield and defense and show exactly why our transfer genius Monchi decided to bring them to Nervión.
¡¡Vamos mi Sevilla,
Vamos Campeón!!

YAY!!! SEVILLA IS BACK!!!
So excited for the return of us playing matches that matter. Can’t wait to see how we do today–the supercopa is hardly the most prestigious trophy ever, but winning this would be a great way to start the season and get some momentum up for Braga.
VAMOS!!!

-

anybody watching this live?

-

That was our chance right there… Renato needed to put that away.

-

We’re starting to pass the ball better. I hope we can keep this up.

-

Absolute class by Cigarini. Can’t wait to see more of this kid. Superb finish by LuFa as well. Vamos mi Sevilla!

-

It’s go time! With Kanouté on, there’s more space for Cigarini to create. And he’s been pretty decent so far.

-

I guess big Fredi still has it! Qué Golazzo!

-

Oh Sevilla how I’ve missed you.. Vamos Campeón!!!! 3-1!!

-

Kanouté is that dude! We gotta keep this 2-goal lead.
ps. did anybody see Escudé’s shirt? “sqd”? lol!

-

Geez man! I almost had a heart attack. Thank God for the offside call because 3-1 is a much better score going away than 3-2. We have a serious shot at this, we’re in a very good position indeed.
And yeah, what’s good with Escudé’s shirt?

-

What a result! But you know we’re gonna feel the heat at the Nou Camp. Remember when we pissed them off last season? 4-0?

-

This Sevilla squad seems to have a little more composure than the sides of the past couple seasons. Don’t get me wrong, it’s only one game and doesn’t mean a lot but I felt that once we started passing and playing our game, we looked stronger than ever. Like I said in the post, hopefully Cigarini and Dabo as well as Guarente who didn’t play today are the necessary pieces to completing our puzzle. It was also very encouraging to see all three strikers play so well, something that I can’t even remember the last time I witnessed. I am absolutely over the moon with this result, can’t wait for Thursday when we get our first taste of the CL and we can re-introduce ourselves to Europe as the new Sevilla. Maybe I’m a little too excited, but no doubt this is going to be one hell of a season.

-

Too busy to watch the game but what a result

-

(oops)

-

That really blows that you guys blew it against Braga. I was actually convincing people that La liga is not a 2 horse race and Sevilla are as good as if not better than Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool or Tottenham. The guys have let me down. I still think Navas is one of the best right wingers in the game. What’s the situation with Fabiano?

-

it does blow. it blows a lot. we are all pretty bummed because we’ve been telling our friends the same things. i’m kinda hoping we get knocked out of the uefa before too long, cause i’d like to play a larger role in la liga. we’ll see though. what’s with fabiano? he’s playing. he’s gonna be on our team all season unless somebody wants to buy him and let him ride their bench during CL matches. he’ll probably sign an extension this year and we’ll try to shop him next summer again.

-

yer agree with barcadonia, sad to see you go out already. Although timmub that is a good point, hopefully you can focus 100% on La Liga and give RM and Barca a challenge. The summer signings ATM have made, has gotten me excited a bit.

-

timmub – I would still want Sevilla to do well in the Europa League, maybe even win it, cause they have the potential too, and in the process defeat teams like ManCity, Liverpool and Juventus. And I really do hope the minimum you guys finish this year is Top 4. Does Fabiano’s contract have 1 or 2 more years to run? And does Madrid have a buyback option for Negredo next summer? And what is the price of that option?

-

this is fabianos last year. Madrid still has a buyback option at the end of this year.
I agree about winning the Europa–even with the great teams there this year we have a better chance of winning that than la liga bc we probably won’t be able to sustain the consistency needed to compete with the megasquads real and barca buy/build every year. it’s not financially feasible for us, and even if we can beat them when we play them we won’t have the depth or superstars to keep up over 38 games.
not sure what anthonys up to but if you’re looking for up to date Sevilla news you might drop by our site.

-

speaking of up to date–fabiano re-upped until 2013 today. yay!
