Sevilla 3-1 Mallorca; Back on Track
By: Anthony | May 11th, 2009
My deepest apologies for my mini-hiatus from the blog but I had some personal problems to deal with over the past week and things haven’t exactly been easy nor have I had time to really do anything but I’m back now and that’s all that matters.
The situation in Nervión was quite the opposite from my personal one in the sense that things were definitely all good.
To say we’re “back on track” is an understatement because so many things against the boys from Palma went right. Kanouté and Fabiano look like they’re finally starting to click again (shame its the end of the season now), the midfield was solid, and most importantly – we’re back to our winning ways.
Jiménez started a bit of a different lineup this week with Mosquera at right back and Adriano at left, Capel on the left flank for Diego Perotti and a Duscher/Renato pairing in central midfield.
The beginning of the match was pretty lively with the match going from end to end and on the 14th minute we got the perfect opportunity to go ahead when Kanouté just missed Navas’ pin point cross. This came back to haunt us seconds later as Mallorca striker Aduriz received a cross from the left, made minced meat out of Julien Escudé and slotted it past Palop.
Right after though, Escudé almost made up for his poor defending when he hit a perfect header but was denied by the crossbar. In the 25th minute our bad luck continued when Luis Fabiano did all the hard work but was denied by the woodwork.
We were completely dominating the match and despite all our bad luck, it only took another 5 minutes before we finally pulled equal. Fabiano was fouled inside the box and therefore was awarded a penalty. Up stepped Kanouté who scored with relative ease and drew us equal with 1 goal a piece.
The half ended pretty nervy when we seemed too content and Varela hit a shot at Palop which forced him to make a difficult save but in the end, we luckily went into the half at 1-1.
We didn’t waste time as right after the break as Fabiano scored a pure golazzo when he took the ball from just outside the box, dummied two defenders and put it past Moya with ease to put us ahead 2-1. It only took us another 16 minutes to grab another goal when Navas broke down the right flank and smashed his shot in the top left corner.
On the 88th minute however, Duscher picked up his second yellow card and was therefore sent off. Not like it really mattered at this point because we had all three points but at the same time, it will be a big loss for next week’s game.
With Valencia, Atlético and Deportivo all winning this past weekend we still have to be on top form when closing out the season in the next three weeks because if we have the slightest slip-up, any of these three teams can catch us. We really don’t have the best of luck as the one day we need the mierda to win, they didn’t and the same goes for Barça. This does show the tightness of La Liga and proves the fact that we will have to perform with the highest intensity for the rest of the campaign.

kanouté and o fabuloso’s chemistry connection is returning. that will be a big boost to close out the season. definitely makes me more comfortable as a fan of the team. i’m less worried about us closing out that 3rd spot. capel played very well over the weekend to hopefully help out his confidence and maybe see him get some more minutes so he doesn’t get more frustrated. i think the right/left back situation (particularly considering the work of mosquera) is one of our bigger holes to fill this summer as has been mentioned before. there were a couple of sequences where mosquera would send in a cross overlapping navas and then navas would send it in on the next attempt. the disparity between the two crosser’s quality was very noticeable. i think since we’ve got the two big heads of kanouté and fabiano in the middle we need all of our wide players to be able to consistently send in quality crosses. so… let’s get out there and find the next dani alves this summer to cover that spot.

Yeah Theo, you got it lol.
Thanks Aaron, thing’s haven’t exactly been the best over this past week but I should be fine now. As for what you said about the team, I totally agree and we need to fill that right back spot. Mosquera and Konko are definitely not convincing enough to play for a squad who is going to play in the Champions League. Other than that, we have a pretty solid squad and considering there are a few new pieces this year, we’ve done pretty well. Give them time to gel and I think next year we’ll come out stronger.

Yeah i noticed watching the game that Navas was really closed down on and had to pass out to Mosquera who kept sending in poor crosses. So i think we need to bring in another young Brazilian/Argentinian to replace the gap left by Alves. But this time someone with a loyal streak ☻!!!.
Also despite our defense being constantly slated we’ve only conceded one more goal away than Mierda and Barca and 6 less than mierda home and seven more than Barca so overall we’ve conceded five less than the Mierda and only six more than Barca☺.
One less encouraging fact though Barca have scored over double the number of goals weve scored (103,51)and although weve conceded less weve also scored less than all the top six teams because of injuries.Posted from

on the topic of our defense, i think palop was winning the zamora before that unfortunate string of 3- and 4-goal games against valencica, barca, and RM.
and i have to say, players leave clubs for other clubs all the time, even players who’ve played the majority of their careers in one place. that’s football. and while alves really annoyed me the year before he left with his whining to leave for chelsea (of all places!), i didn’t feel that his departure was disloyal, and i felt his last, tearful press conference in sevilla was moving and genuine. he’s still ok in my book, anyway.

Yh i know jeremy i agree that he is loyal but his whining over chelsea was pathetic. And did u know that Navas had a deal with chelsea but turned it down because of his homesickness (Thank God!!!).

I never like to wish illness upon anyone but I hope Navas never recovers from his homesickness! That being said, I do actually hope it does get a bit better as it has over the past few years because he’s definitely one of the Spanish national team future starts and I would love to see him called up sooner rather than later.
