Sevilla 2-1 MIERDA; Take That to The Bank

By: Anthony | October 7th, 2009

06-SevillaFC-RMadrid 21Contrary to popular belief, I am still alive. A Sevilla thrashing of Real Madrid equals a four day hangover in Anthony’s world. Lucky for you, I’m back now and ready to break down what was easily the best match of the season so far.

Logically and historically our biggest rival has been cross-town neighbours, Real Betis. To be honest though, I’ve always considered Real Madrid to, not necessarily be our biggest rival, but definitely the team I probably hate the most.

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s no way set in stone on how to properly play football but any fan or lover of the game will know that Madrid plays pretty boring stuff. Maybe I just take it for granted that not every team in the world plays the free-flowing, quick passing, magnificent, mouth watering football that we do.

It’s just something about a team who wants to buy their success that angers me beyond belief. It’s hard to hate their El Clásico rivals Barça who develop their talent from their infamous youth academy and don’t rely upon bank loans to fund their success. Real on the other hand seem to want to buy their way into everything like we’re still living in the days of General Francisco Franco or something…

Coming off an emphatic 4-1 victory over Rangers in Scotland last week in the Champions League, I knew that the squad would be full of confidence coming back home to face one of La Liga’s “elite sides”. True enough, we didn’t disappoint.

Right from the beginning, we came flying out of the gates knowing we had a massive point to prove and that was, all this hype about Sevilla is truly warranted. We have an absolutely solid squad with the depth that we lacked in the past few years to compete with the top 2 of La Liga.

Navas was a bullet on the flank as usual as he absolutely tore apart the Real defense, most notably Marcelo who was about 5 steps behind Jesús on average. Regardless of what anyone said, Jesús Navas was definitely the man of the match.

Time after time we missed easy chances on goal with Fabiano and Konko even missing from within the 6 yard box. Finally on the 34th minute, my personal man of the match, Jesús Navas put us ahead with an unorthodox goal by his standards, smashing in a header off a Fernando Navarro cross as he rose above the useless Marcelo.

That’s how the first half ended – with us up 1-0 and in absolute control of the match.

After the break we continued where we left off, dominating who were considered the favourites coming into the match.

Negredo gave Diego Perotti a absolute sitter when he broke down the right side and put it in for our wonderkid as he took it too easily and hit it right into Casillas. Easily probably the one of the worst misses I’ve ever seen in my life. Real fans say will say it was a great save by Casillas but let’s be realistic here – Perotti basically handed it to him.

That came back to bite us in the ass as on the counter attack we gave away a useless free kick just outside our 18 yard box. Guti accurately took it and put it on the head of a jumping Pepe who headed it past Palop.

Is it just me or is Pepe the ugliest player probably in the world? What was the trying to do with his head? What a strange, strange man. If you know of someone uglier please do make a reference because as far as I’m concerned, no one can top him.

Even after the Real goal we continued to dominate possession and show why La Liga should be considered a three horse race instead of a two horse one.

It didn’t take long for our determination to pay off as in the 65th minute we got another goal through a man who had a lot to make up for his easy miss in front of goal. None other than our Brasilian veteran Renato. Now I personally as anyone who reads this blog will know, have a vert love/hate relationship with him. He will play his heart out one day only to have an absolutely shockingly bad match the next week. Fortunately for us though, he always seems to score against the mierda. A pinpoint Adriano cross resulted in Renato putting us ahead 2-1 in what was a much deserved lead considering we dominated the match entirely.

The game continued with us all over the team who spent 10 times the amount we did this summer and we closed up shop with a final result of 2-1.

The neutrals, football lovers, and all of Spain outside the capital is probably happy we won and it just shows how much progress we’ve made from previous seasons and our intent from here on in.

Our result does keep us stagnant at third place due to worse goal differential but I have no doubts that with the way we’re playing we can very easily leap frog the mierda.

A few special personal shoutouts and special mentions are as follows:

Didier Zokora who was an absolute rock in the midfield. I was very familiar with him from his time at Tottenham but never appreciated him until now. La Liga is more his style and he’s proving to be a bargain at just 9 million Euros. He’s an absolute rock in the midfield, something we lacked since the departure of Christian Poulsen. Zokora is definitely becoming a fan favourite in the Sánchez Pizjuán as well as we saw when he got the crown all riled up as he held off the big ugly Pepe in the corner towards the end of the match and ended up getting the foul call. His stability allows Renato to roam and have a more attacking mindset, something that’s resulted in the Brasilian getting off the a good start scoring-wise so far. Most importantly though, he kept Kaká absolutely silent and when you can do that to a team’s best player, you can only expect good things.

Jesús Navas who like I said, was easily man of the match. He played out of his skin and scored the first as well as passed to Adriano who crossed it in for the second goal. He was all over the pitch and gave the Real defense a headache every time he dribbled near them. A description of our prodigal son isn’t really needed if you’re a true Sevillista. He’s amazing – yes we know.

If anyone else deserves a special mention, definitely let me know. Obviously the whole team played well but I think those were definitely the two men who deserved as much.

Everyone knows that the mierda fans will come out now and make excuses about Ronaldo being injured and this, that and the other but we know that’s all bullshit. Anyone who watched the match could see that we were clearly the stronger side and came out wanting to win. We had a game plan, stuck to it, and did the business. Stop being bitter and admit that. Thanks a lot.

It’s a shitty time for a two week international break because just as we had all that momentum, we have to put it on halt until we resume league play against Deportivo la Coruña. As we know, we definitely had their number last year, even at one point beating them 3 times in only a span of 1 week but this will be far from easy also considering they’re doing very well so far. They sit in fourth, just one place behind us and only three points behind us meaning they could very easily catch up.

More about that later but for now I think we all deserve to bask in the euphoria (as if I haven’t enough).

¡¡VAMOS CAMPEÓN!!

ugly players? you’re missing: ronaldinho (jar-jar binks) and ribery. as much as pepe looks like shrek, i would put him one tier below the ugliness bar set by those two!

Don’t forget that in La Liga, it is not goal differential that matters, but head-to-head. Right now, because you haven’t play Madrid twice, they are using goal differential, but technically you are above them.

“buy their way into everything like we’re still living in the days of General Francisco Franco or something…”

Really? I thought Franco accomplished things through military and murder. But buying football players is pretty close to that, isn’t it.

    You hack.

ha! Tom! welcome to the blog! just so you know, anthony probably didn’t really think that madrid’s egregious spending was actually tantamount to murder and military force. we just enjoy seeing mierda’s attempts to buy the league fall flat, and that may come in any nonsensical form of gloating imaginable. if you don’t wanna read it, go back to your own team’s page.

btw. im concerned with this benzema stuff. i thoroughly enjoy the early phases of a real madrid team morale implosion, but i just don’t want them to take back negredo at the end of the season… so hopefully he can be just disruptive enough to help mierda fall down the table without being such a problem that we lose our newly minted spanish international at season’s end.

@ Diego; I might check Marca & AS from time to time, but I enjoy reading the articles on Diario de Sevilla and ABC (de Sevilla).

Very well written Anthony; I knew it would be worth the wait. =) But man, I never knew you hated Real Madrid that much. There isn’t even a hint of compassion towards them. lol

In regards to the match, I couldn’t be more proud of our team. I was very worried when Konko had to switch to CB due to Squillaci’s injury (which he’s recently recovered from). But Drago lead that back line well with his expertise. I don’t think the international break will affect us that much. I think it’s actually a plus for us since we’ve got a lot of fixtures coming up in the next 2 months. But in the mean time, I’ll relax and enjoy this victory a bit more, as well as the good press we’re getting, and perhaps, buy myself a scarf or two from the online store. =)

Thanks for the warm welcome SRH. And to be clear: This isn’t about ‘my team’ whoever you imagine that to be. It’s about cheapening history and a dreadful era where many lost their lives by comparing it to football clubs and their spending. It’s a sensitive subject that Anthony is exploiting for the sake of something as trivial as a football rivalry.

look tom, i love being super self-righteous and holier than thou on the internet as much as anyone, but good grief, get over yourself, man.

most people agree that as franco’s favorite team (and propaganda vehicle), real madrid enjoyed a certain favoritism and access to resources during his rule. so the comment anthony made isn’t really an exaggeration of anything–in that time, they bought their way into great success bc franco was giving them money. that shares a certain similarity to the use of bank resources real was allowed during a terrible economic downturn to attempt to buy the league this past summer. do you understand the connection?

but even if anthony were the one who was misguided about the facts (and not you), do you really think this sports blog is devaluing the lives lost and repression of franco’s spain with one sentence about franco? really? more than spain’s continued ambivalence about officially acknowledging the atrocities that happened? more than the people who continue to pronounce their loyalty to franco in spain today? i don’t know you, and i can’t say what your motives are, but i just have a hard time believing that you’re on some kind of quest to protect the honor of those who lost their lives by arguing with a blog that has about 10 regular commenters.

if that is your honest intention, though, i have to say you’ve probably failed with those who read here.

anyway, glad you’re back anthony. honestly this write-up was tamer than i thought it would be. : )

I know Barca has recently been successful with canteranos, but if you look no further than President Gaspart you will see they spent money to bring in star players too. Just because they had a good crop of young talent in the last 5 or so years doesn’t mean they are any better than Madrid.

Franco’s air force members were a part of a team called Atletico Avion, which is now Atletico Madrid. The Real Madrid stadium was bombed and their president at the time was captured and tortured by Franco’s forces. Is that the way you treat you “favorite team”? If Franco was so biased toward Real then why did Barca win about the same amount of La Liga Titles during Franco’s reign. Check your facts guys. We are gentlemen here, there is no need for such hate. Its just a game.

I didn’t know that sevilla fans were such dumb asses I always respected those folks

Anthony if you knew shit about la liga history you’d know that sevilla didn’t always play pretty football and that real madrid on the other hand did throughout its long and rich history , boring football ? Seriously when did you become a “fan” of la liga ? 2006 perhaps ? Because anybody who watched la liga before that knows realmadrid’s history of beautiful football and just so you know we had real madrids who had plenty of canteranos in the past and that didn’t “buy their way to success ” actually the team that played sevilla the other day had 4 canteranos play in casillas , raul , guti and granero even now our cantera is one of the best around , where did negredo come from btw? Yea that’s what I thought
And you licking barca’s ass not knowing they have spent millions on superstars too to help them become better in the past they might be doing well with their cantera right now but it hasn’t always been this way FYI

Just a history lesson , and no I’m not charging this was for free :-)

thanks for posting, andres. while anthony may be a tad hyperbolic at times with his love for sevilla and his disdain for RM (and i’ll admit i share his sentiments), we are only enjoying our success right now. thanks for reminding us that real madrid have a history. fascinating! they were good before? i thought the first five games were their first wins ever!! “good for them!”, i thought. hm…

where do you think people’s hatred for real madrid comes from? from their $$$$? i doubt it. if they weren’t the most successful spanish club in history, you wouldn’t hear people hating on them. being successful means, unfortunately, making enemies. i’m surprised you haven’t dealt with that yet, as you seem to have been a fan for a while. don’t let our (hyperbolic, at times) hate go to your head. just look at your team, your president, your bank loans and your coach (who will be fired unless he produces silverwear), and you have MUCH more to worry about than some small-time, 2nd-rate team like sevilla (who by the way just dominated your team) and their bloggers.

we will indeed see you in the bernabeu, the only difference is that our team will not be having an existential crisis all over nervión should we lose. your stakes are much higher. best of luck! you have a nice little club there!

Cule the only thing you’ve exposed is the fact that you’re a mental midget , so you mean to tell me that negredo isn’t a madrid canterano ? Negredo was born in madrid , his first club was escuela then he spent some time at rayo before moving to real madrid B if messi and iniesta are considered barca canteranos then negredo is madrid’s so tell me , how exactly have I been exposed ? You peanut size brain having idiot I’ve been exposed alright :-)
    Now back to normal people
Aaron I can handle criticism but I would like the person that’s criticizing to know what they’re talking about , constructive criticism is the term
When I brought up our history I didn’t do so to brag or whatever you thought I did it for I was pointing out that Anthony doesn’t know jack about my team , simple
And yes expectations are sky high at the bernabeu and it has always been that way matter of fact but that hasn’t stopped us from winning before and it won’t now
As I said see you at the bernabeu

    ha!

the save WAS awesome. but perotti helped him a bit by putting it back a bit towards the center of the goal, instead of looking for the left corner. and if he’d just put it in the air instead of on the ground casillas wouldn’t have had a prayer. that said, he was probably so sure that casillas wasn’t even in the area code he wasn’t thinking about that. so hats off. amazing save.

andres. go away. this is a sevilla fan football blog. not a ranting angry mierda fan/franco era fact checker’s blog. but if you decide to open one up send us the link and we’ll all be sure to stop by.

yepp fair comment SRH, he should of scored, but Casillas should get all the credit, just like everyone saying Madrid were poor even though Sevilla should get credit for playing amazing. The way Anthony was describing it seemed like it was an average save, wereas i’m pretty sure you won’t see a better save this season..
