Rangers 1-4 Sevilla; Heading to the Top

By: Anthony | October 1st, 2009

First of all, what a great picture. Second of all, we’re amazing.

Sorry for not having this post up earlier but the WordPress server was down yesterday as they were setting up a new layout for the “Dashboard” where you write and edit entries.

Anyways, to the news you all are waiting to hear…

If we weren’t considered a real threat coming into this competition we definitely have to be now. Sure, I like being the underdog because we get teams who don’t know that “little club” from the south of Spain until we smash them *cough* Rangers *cough*, but seriously, we’re good.

I’ve never seen a stronger Sevilla side in my lifetime and I’ve been watching this club since I came out of the womb. From the way we seem to put the ball in the back of the net effortlessly, to the great wall of Nervión which is our defense, we’re about as complete as any team out there.

We knew coming into this match that it would be anything but easy and despite being the probably favourites, Rangers are far from a pushover.

To add to what could have been a few difficulties in the match, our usual left winger Diego Perotti was out due to a slight knock he picked up against Mallorca and therefore Diego Capel started in his place. After last weekend’s thumping of Bilbao, I actually had great confidence that Capel would get the job done in place of Perotti as he was absolutely stellar. Another change from the weekend is that Sergio Sánchez was rested to make way for Konko and Dragutinović out for the recovered Julien Escudé at the heart of the defense. A surprise was that Lolo maintained his spot in central midfield when Romaric was in the squad having fully recovered. Negredo as expected did start on the bench with our legendary pair of Fabiano and Kanouté starting up top.

The first half wasn’t a direct indication of out best football. We had some glorious opportunities through Kanouté as did Rangers when they could have very easily been given a penalty.

It was in the second half where we really turned up the heat and showed Scotland and moreover Europe, exactly what we’re all about and that’s beautiful football.

Five minutes into the half we were rewarded a freekick which Lolo took quickly to Navas who then crossed in which Konko rose to head in the back of the net with an absolutely amazing header. It was just the other day that I was saying how excited I am with the prospect of Sánchez being such an amazing right back and taking over for Konko who was very inconsistent last year but I see that Abdoulay feels his position and playing time under threat so he’s starting to perform. It’s amazing to see how a bit of competition in the squad strengthens it completely and the depth we have now is absolutely mouth watering.

In the 64th minute, Fabiano and Kanouté linked up perfectly as usual and basically unlocked the whole Rangers team as OFabuloso eventually pulled the ball back for Adriano who smashed it in to put us up 2-0.

At this point we were completely in the drivers seat and added another one later when once again the Rangers’ defense was caught napping. Kanouté received the ball on the flank, had all the time in the world and sent in a perfect cross which Fabiano towered over the Rangers defender to head into the back of the net with emphasis.

3-0 and no looking back now.

Why look back when you can look forward right? Exactly what we did just 2 minutes later as this time LuFa and Fredi played a bit of role-reversal. Navas sent Fabiano in on a 2v1 with big Fredi supporting in the middle who eventually received the low ball and slotted it past the Rangers’ keeper to put us in full control at 4-0.

There’s nothing to talk about from here other than Nacho Novo scored a 88th minute consolation goal for Rangers’ which ruined our clean sheet. It was a bit of poor defending as we gave him too much space but the back line as solid all night so I can’t critique or I’d be way too harsh. It was also much too strong and well-placed for Palop to deal with so no blame attached there either.

If we had anything to prove I believe we proved it with our amazing performance in Glasgow and I may sound repetitive but we’re definitely a team to watch out for both domestically and in Europe. Having said that, the mierda A.K.A. Real Madrid visit the Sánchez Pizjuan this Sunday in a match which will definitely be our biggest test this season thus far. A win there and I’ll be in absolute ecstasy.

If there is a team worthy of being called mierda, can’t think of any team better than Sevilla and it’s very uncultured Andalucian fan base =)

Uncultured Andalucían fan base? Andalucía is the culture of Spain. When people outside of Spain think of Spain they think of things like bull fighting and Flamenco fighting which all originated in Andalucía. There are only two teams eligible to be considered mierda and those are Real Madrid and their Franco-era “titles” as well as Betis for obvious reasons.

anyone wanna guess at the starting lineup?

    im gonna say

    Fabiano and Negredo
    Adriano Zokora Renato Navas
    Navarro Squillaci Escude Sanchez
    Palop

could certainly be kanoute up front instead of negredo, but i think manolo was also thinking about the real game when he gave negredo some time off… honestly though, it barely matters we have 3 strikers who are simultaneously on fire. love it!

i think renato gets the start too… i will always have mixed feelings, but he deserves it. Adriano starts on the left cus perotti is just getting healthy and im not sure manolo trusts capel as much as he would adriano and his greater experience.

not sure about the backs either.

subs: if we go behind: Kanoute and Capel (or whichever striker doesnt start)
if we go ahead: Capel (he does a nice job of burning time with the ball and keeping the other team off balance) and maybe Romaric for a striker to pull back the formation a bit.

anyway, im just entertaining myself cus im so pumped for this game.

3 points here would be HUGE!

    lets go Sevilla!

haha, when they cut to florentino you can see him thinking “how can they be good WITHOUT spending money?!?!?!?!?”

he clearly has never seen anything like this before.

well played, team. we should have done better finishing, and this game should have probably been 3 or 4-1, but we got the win, which is obviously the main thing. this ought to cut a little into all that “2 horse race” crap.

    YYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so f-ing pumped! we were DECISIVELY the better team and it shouldn’t have been that close.

perotti puts that one foot higher and we go up 2-0 and there’s no drama. but who cares!?!? AMAZING.

i havent gotten to watch a full game for a while and my first thought was this: NAVAS. holy shit. that guy is WAY better than i even remembered. he was out of his mind the whole game.

was a blessing in disguise that navarro came on cus he was fantastic both on d and coming forward (setting up the first goal… which was beautiful).

Renato continues to prove my skepticism wrong and is (or possibly HAS) winning (won) me over.

im wondering a little again about our subs though… did we really need to do a kanoute for negredo swap? dont we have any better defensive options? though that said it was nice keeping madrid on the back of their heels straight through the full 90+ without ever letting them really look all that threatening.

i love this team. they’re amazing. a couple weeks off to bask in the momentary glory, but hopefully not to lose any focus.

    SEVILLA!!!

agree with everything you said, srh. well, except i didn’t mind kanoute coming on–i thought we totally needed a really strong player up top that could both play with his back to the goal and and use his physicality to shield off the ball and to challenge for the clearances as things got more ragged, OR play full speed ahead on counters. which he did very well.

and yes: guti = the worst. gosh, i hate that guy. he and ramos deserve each other. i hope they have to sit next to each other on the team bus. with pepe sitting behind them and throwing popcorn or something.

i agree w/ kanoute that it worked. i just think its interesting to track.

one last small concern was that i felt like there were a few times when we tried to dribble it out of the back or pass it out and we ended up turning the ball over in dangerous situations. they didn’t make us pay today, but it gave me some extra anxiety that i’d prefer them not to get in the habit of doing.

still glowing. so wonderful seeing all those frustrated d-bag real mierda players wondering what the hell just ran them over :)

Awesome win against Real Madrid and combined with the Rangers mid-week thrashing….this team is crazy good. Could’ve/Should’ve beaten Real 4-1.

To be honest, I was really skeptical about Zokora. He’s been doing brilliantly so far, but we’ll see in the long run, especially in the CL. But after all, Monchi really wanted this guy, so I’m not surprised he’s done well.

Zokora? He’s been my favourite player @ Tottenham Hotspurs. I think you made a great deal there.

And thanks for beating Madrid, not only beating them but actually completely dominate them! It made my day :D

But still, I’m a Barca fan. And as a Barca fan, I predict you a great season, maybe you will be Champion in the end, and not us or Real Madrid. I’d be okay with it, as long as RM fails this season.

    things that annoy me:

all these articles that say our win was a “shock”.

come on! we are a red hot team and were 3rd in la liga last year. you don’t call it a “shock” when one of the top two teams loses AWAY to the third place team.

that said, what WAS a shock was the extent to which we dominated and were the better team. so maybe in that sense the word shock is a little more appropriate.

    SRH,

I totally read you mate. I have been saying the same thing in the real offside. It is pure arrogance that anyone thinks sevilla beating madrid at home is even a small surprise, let alone a shock. Madrid truly think they are that good.

Even Sevilla beating madrid in madrid is not even a small surprise.

No post up yet for the game of the year, Anthony?

LOL, I’m a Real Madrid fan who totally forgot why I was a Real Madrid fan for the 90 minutes of the game. LOVED Sevilla, they have been on an amazing tear lately, it wasn’t just this game. Should’ve won by 5+ goals easy. If you want to relive the game and see it again from a Sevilla POV, plus all my thoughts b4/after it for both teams, then visit my game blog!

Dancy, great write up. please send along any more sevilla stuff you write.

so, i realize this game was only two days ago, but im already anxious for our next one. what horrible timing for the international break. i wanted us to take this momentum and roll it into a devastating steamroller on the league. now i worry they’ll lose some focus playing for national teams and perhaps start listening to too much of the now glowing news coverage.

im also a bit nervous about deportivo, our next match. much like real was cocky coming to our house despite being just 3 points and one spot in the standings above us, we need to be careful heading out to play deportivo who is eerily 3 points and exactly one spot behind us. they have played well this season and i never enjoy playing against them. so lets just hope that we dont lose our focus and when we get back to business in two weeks we pick up where we’ve left off.

    vamos sevilla!

greetings, diego! i come to “hastalamuerte.net” on occasion to read the posts.

SRH: i think maybe you’ve been reading too much marca lately… :) i haven’t seen a lot of reporting that the match was a shock win except there and maybe as.com or elmundodeportivo.es. oh well! i like shocking people. i don’t feel like a lack of respect is really a bad thing. i think this team (as kanouté has said before) prefers to fly a little under the radar than barça/RM until we win la liga at the end. at some point, though, you’re right: we need to be respected by the spanish press outside of sevilla.

it is a long season, but if we keep this form up, there’s no way we’ll be out of a running for all the marbles come season’s end. A POR ELLOS!!
