Poulsen to Barcelona??

By: Ryan | March 6th, 2008

So we get out of the Champions League and now we immediately start selling off players??

I first read this on Spanish Football and Sports that Sevilla midfielder Christian Poulsen is headed to Barcelona come season’s end.

I read the article in TV3 (note the article is in Catalan:TV3 is one of the TV stations in Catalunya) and basically it says that the contract has been confirmed, but Barcelona still has to convince Del Nido on the deal. The sticking point also is that Poulsen has one more year left on his contract at Sevilla and the two clubs will have to come to an agreement on how to handle that.

Poulsen is a good midfielder. He won’t score you many goals, but he knows how to defend and has played very well this season with Keita. The 28 year old came over from Schalke in 2006 and has fit in very well. It would be a shame to see him leave after this season.

Barcelona are looking at the Danish midfielder to replace Edmilson who’s contract is up on June 30th and who will not resign with the Catalan club.

On your first remark, Ryan: Sevilla president Del Nido has said last month the club will have to sell if they don’t qualify for next CL (http://fcbtransfers.blogspot.com/2008/02/sevillas-end-of-season-sales_18.html).

You think he can play in a 4-3-3, as defensive midfielder? Don’t know him very well but he seems more a 4-4-2 guy to me, playing alongside another guy in center midfield.

He can play as def mid in a 4-3-3. It should be said he is better in a 4-4-2, but he has the potential. The only thing he might not have by himself is the speed to keep up. But he does play physical and doesn’t hesitate to go in for balls or to foul..hard.

And I know the club will sell if they don’t qualify for the Champions League, I mentioned that in a previous post. But know that half the stuff that comes out of Del Nido’s mouth is true, and the other half is crap.

There is still a lot of league left, and Poulsen isn’t a huge burden on our monetary funds as of now.

The Sevilla website says Poulsen has denied everything, so let’s see what will happen.

I guess we can use some agressive attitude in midfield, for that he certainly would be welcomed.

    thanks for your view,

Diego Capel could also be a summer target for Barcelona. He has a buyout clause of 12 million euro. Which is very little I guess, so if Barcelona doesn’t get him, some other European top club probably will (if they don’t renew him soon).

Same question as for Poulsen: you think he can play (as a left winger) in a 4-3-3? And is he already consistent enough to set a step higher?

Diego Capel is a beast. He is only 19 but already plays more like a seasoned vet. He has tons of pace and is very quick on the ball.

His downside is that he tends to put his head down and just run down and back on the wing, and never does the ‘new’ thing that coaches look for out of their outside wingers and that is cut into the middle and look for scoring opportunities. Just lately he’s scored a few goals, so he’s slowly but surely acquiring that touch.

I don’t know about him being a transfer to Barcelona however. I’m hoping he doesn’t become the next Baptista or Sergio Ramos and leave Sevilla for greener pastures. I would be VERY upset if we lose this kid.

Honestly, Ryan: if it’s true about those 12 million euro (and it seems to be the case), it would surprise me if nobody snatches him this summer. Anyway, we’ll see, maybe he choses to mature one more year at Sevilla (and then leave for free ;-) ). Thanks for your view!
