OFFICIAL: Negredo Signs

By: Anthony | August 21st, 2009

Monchi, Monchi, what would we do without you?

How can you not be excited when your club signs one of the most sought after players in the market? Well needless to say then that I’m absolutely enthused with Monchi’s latest steal of Negredo from the big spending mierda.

The fee was undisclosed by the club meaning it couldn’t have been a hell of a lot otherwise it would have had to be disclosed and placed on the stock market. The estimated fee is believed to be about €12 million or so and rising to €15 million depending on performances and all that junk. Of course the mierda like they always do have added a buy back clause in the deal and it really wouldn’t surprise me if they take him back next season when Van Nistelrooy’s contract expires.

This is all a bit of a shock to me as I really never imagined we had the funds to prize Negredo to Andalucía but when Fred committed himself to Fluminense earlier this week, Monchi put his money where Del Nido’s mouth is and signed probably the best available striker on the market in Negredo.

Alvaro Negredo is a proven La Liga goal scorer netting 19 goals last campaign for our fellow Andalucíans, Almería and 13 the previous campaign; he was the second highest goal scoring Spaniard last year after David Villa.

The addition of Negredo now means we have 5 strikers either signaling the departure of one or very limited playing time at best. Kanouté and Luis Fabiano are the obvious starting pair with Negredo obviously having one foot in the door to break the partnership but we can’t forget about both Koné and Chevantón who have played well (as usual) in the pre-season thus far.

In my opinion we don’t need to get rid of any strikers. Sure Chevantón will probably get the shit end of the stick and get the limited playing time but remember that both Kanouté and Koné will be gone for possibly a few weeks due to the African Cup of Nations and Chevantón and Fabiano both have a history of injuries. Last season we clearly saw that at one point, all four of our strikers were injured causing Renato and Acosta to start up front for a game of two which wasn’t effective to say the least.

With a massive signing like this one, Del Nido, Monchi and Jiménez are signaling our intent for the upcoming season where we prepare for our return to the Champions League and for a La Liga campaign which will be one to remember. We’re no where near the level of Real Madrid and definitely not even close to Barcelona who are far superior to the mierda but we’re close behind. We’re definitely the team this season not to be taken lightly.

The squad now has a total of 25 players which is way too many so there will be no more signings, thats for sure. Monchi has completed another very successful transfer window by signing Didier Zokora to strengthen our midfield which was much needed, Sergio Sánchez to solidify the right back position which we lacked since Alves’ departure and now Negredo to give us the extra fire power up front.

The squad is looking good, very good indeed.

    Hell. Yes.

I am SO pumped about this signing. Honestly, this is the difference between us talking a lot of BS about competing for three trophies, and actually having the manpower to be able to do it. So long as we’re in the Champs league and King’s Cup there will be plenty of striker minutes to go around without running our horses into the ground.

    SO PUMPED.

I still wouldn’t be shocked if they get one more mid though, to make sure that when zokora nad romaric are gone, we’ve got cover.

And welcome back Anthony. I’ve definitely missed reading your posts over the last month.

Lets hurry up and start the season already.

Oh, final question. What are the terms of Real Madrid’s buy back clauses? If they were to buy him back, It’d have to be for more than we paid… Anyone have an idea from previous RM deals what that buy back sum would look like?

Congrats on getting Negredo from us at Real Madrid! This was definitely the best place for him, thank god RM listened to him and didn’t force him to go to Hull or Zaragoza. I’m sure he’ll do well for you guys – man, the top 3 teams in La Liga are all such offensive juggernauts now, huh? :D Spain will rule this year in the CL, that’s for sure!

SRH – I heard that the buyback is 17M after 1 yr and 20M after 2 yrs, with a 14M fee. So essentially you guys get him for free if we buy him back, since you’re paying him 3M per year gross. Not a bad deal!

One question I have for you: do you guys usually play 2 strikers, using a 4-4-2? Kanoute and Fabiano are both awesome players, so I was a little surprised Negredo wanted to go to Sevilla so much, since it doesn’t look like there’ll be lots of PT for him?

Can’t wait to see the first game against Valencia! Sevilla just became my 2nd favorite team in La Liga, btw. <3 Good luck to you guys and to Alvaro!!

Dancy normally we do play 4-4-2 but now i think we’re gonna go with more of a 4-1-2-1-2 with zokora in defensive midfield and romaric in attacking midfield. I think it will be difficult to play with three strikers because we have so much attacking talent on the wings (navas, perotti, capel and adriano). So i think negredo, fabiano and kanoute will all play for some games each. Maybe negredo coming on as a sub.

Thanks for the info Dancy. I’d add that with games missed/rested by Fabiano/Kanoute there were way too many times last year when we played with only one striker up top and were markedly much less effective. I expect us to see much less (hopefully none) of the 1 striker set.

That IS a good deal for us… Though I’d really like this deal to be permanent. I’d rather he stay than have the cash. He’s still young and only gonna get better.

Wish he would’ve signed for Valencia, as Unai and Llorente definitely wanted him. But oh well, good signing. Can’t wait for the first game in Mestalla next weekend. Better bring your A game. Amunt.

i haven’t been this excited about our la liga campaign before. this signing, along with how much i have been liking zokora anchoring our midfield, is a perfect fit for the future of sevilla — especially if fabiano eventually does decide to leave some time in the future. we’re not looking ahead, though. this was a signing to help us win NOW. and it will. VAMOS MI SEVILLA!

Theo – thx for the info. I’m expecting Negredo to come off the bench too, at least initially. Hopefully he can prove himself amidst the great talent you guys have.

SRH – this may become a permanent deal later on, who knows? During his presentation Del Nido publically thanked the player for his “indominable will” for wanting to come to Sevilla. Which means both the club and the player WANTS this deal for the long term. In 2 years time Real will still have 2 strikers younger than him, Benzema and Higuain. Negredo may decide to stay at Sevilla permanently then, as Kanoute will be 33 and Fabiano 30. I’m really hoping he’ll come back to Real in the future . . but only time will tell, right?

By the way, how did you guys get into the first pot for the CL this year? Pretty amazing!

    Hey Dancy,

great question. i was really puzzled by how we jumped RM for the first pot… so here’s the answer. there is some sort of FIFA “coefficient” that ranks clubs for the CL. and sevilla are actually ranked 6th in the world with RM at 13. largely, its because the rankings are based on the last 5 years and so we’re still benefiting from our consecutive UEFA cups. but it is a pretty odd system.

But it is very good for us. Is it based on just European perfomance or on domestic league as well? Also when is the Champions League group draw

That is definitely a good draw. Stuttgart might be a bit tricky for us. We beat them at home last year in the UEFA cup, but it’s a different team now. Rangers might pose a threat to us at Ibrox, especially since our defense is very susceptible from set pieces. Like Jiménez said, hopefully we’ll show our class, and come out of the group comfortably as winners.

I don’t know about you guys, but in almost every discussion of La Liga that I find, Sevilla is hardly mentioned. I guess it’s best to keep quiet and surprise everyone later. We still have one of the better defenses in the league (even though I’m still not that comfortable with Escudé back there). It will be hard this year, as it is every year, but I still want us to aim high and make it difficult for Barcelona and Real Madrid so we could make it clear that we are the “best of the rest”. The game this Sunday against Valencia is of such huge importance. Winning at the Mestalla is never easy, unless you’re Racing Santander, but a win will be a great way to start off the season. And to add to that, as a direct rival for a CL spot, it’ll look good in the head-to-head record. We’ve missed out on the Champions League twice in the last few years because of an inferior head-to-head record!

I agree Edinho in the every prediction i see sevilla are always predicted to come 5th or 6th. Do 2 uefa cups , a copa del rey, a european super cup, and two third places in the last three seasons not mean anything?!?

My apologies but I will not have a preview up. I am about shoulder deep in work at the moment but since its the weekend I will definitely have a post-match post up as well as a few other bits of important news everyone should know about.

    ¡¡Vamos mi Sevilla!!

First game tomorrow, about time, eh?

@Theo well thats because these so called analists look almost exclusively at the front line of a team and tend to ignore the defense a bit (wich is where Sevilla is strongest). Same thing with them predicting madrid will win the CL where madrid still didnt sort out there defense properly.

Anyway really looking forward to the game tomorrow vs you guys. Should provide a good notion of how good Sevilla en Valencia both are at the moment as well.

huh. every article i’ve read (that doesnt talk exclusively about real/barcelona) pegs sevilla as the best of the rest. goal.com had their season preview for sevilla predicting us to finish third.

where do you all usually get your sevilla news? i dont speak spanish, so i usually just do a daily google-news search for sevilla and get lots of stuff to pop up.

well said, everyone–i am often disappointed to see sevilla projected to qualify for europa, but as someone else said i’m sort of resigned to us being considered as also-rans whose recent success is al fluke. after real madrid and barcelona, everyone looks at the combinations of maxi/kün/forlan/etc at atletico, and silva/villa/etc at valencia, and for some reason kanoute/fabiano/negredo/the best stable of wingers in la liga just doesn’t capture the imagination the same way.

also, i’m so excited for the new season. 30 minutes until our long summer is over! YAY!!!

finally, while sevilla fc has had a very effective summer transfer window, it seems like sevilla theoffside has made a few summer acquisitions as well! i’m very happy to see this community growing–looking forward to sharing this season with you all. and on that note, anthony if you have time i think it’d be great to have a valencia post where we could all go to discuss the game beforehand and during in the comments section. i know you don’t have time to put up a preview, but even a placeholder for comments to go would be great. and as always, thanks for running the blog–great work!

@Jeremy Well the Valencia and Atletico attacking lines are better then yours, lets be honest theres a reason they got a lot more goals then sevilla last season. I still think that even with Negredo our attack of Villa, Mata, Pablo, Silva and a lot of talent benched is superiour.

However the Valencia defense still isnt quite on the same page as yours. Wich is why i think you guys are the favorite for 3rd or maybe more and we might get shipped with a non CL spot because we waste more points against the smaller teams.

martijn, i definitely agree, and i didn’t mean to take anything away from the fearsome attacks of either of those sides. i certainly think villa, forlan, and even kun belong in the discussion of the world’s elite strikers today (or perhaps in the case of kun, POTENTIAL greatness). but i do think that sevilla is in a unique position among european clubs in that they have a front line of two proven, reliable goal scorers, and now the third they’ve added. so it should be a pretty interesting season. and match tomorrow. : )

@jeremy don’t get me wrong i think while it might not be the best front line in la liga its definatly sufficient with the kind of defense you guys got.

And if Real plays like they did today with a backline that is still not solid i think a top 2 finish might be possible this year. I rate this Sevilla side very highly.

Hi martijn i cant really agree that our starrting attacking line-up isnt as good we scored so few goals because half the time we had some strikers injured. Maybe valencia have more attacking depth on the bench but people forget we have two good talents on the bench still in arouna Kone (injuries-stopped him from playing) and Chevanton (ditto). But as jeremy said we have proven strikers and if we can not get any injuries i hope the galacticos 2.0 flop and we take second. It’s not impossible villareal did it to barcelona 2 seasons ago we just need to stay with them and hope at some point one of them folds

Same story as last year’s game at the Mestalla. Give Valencia a man advantage, you’re bound to pay for it. But I must say, their chances were limited in the 1st half. Losing Romaric (who’s out for 3-4 weeks) really affected our creativity. Once Zokora came in, we couldnt really threaten the Valencia defense. All I’ll say is Zaragoza’s next, and they better be ready for Negredo, cause that guy looks like he wants to prove a point!
