OFFICIAL: Morgan de Sanctis Sold to Napoli
By: Anthony | July 24th, 2009
I think everyone saw this one coming a long time ago as De Sanctis was clearly unhappy playing second string to Andrés Palop. Morgan was warned when he signed for us from Udinese two years ago that Palop was number one and would continue to be unless things drastically change but De Sanctis said he was ready to prove his worth and take every opportunity to crack the starting XI.
Clearly that didn’t happen and last season he was loaned out to Turkish giants Galatasaray for a year and did considerably well there. After his solid performances in Turkey I thought we may take him back and keep him for the upcoming season. Then it hit me that he’s nearly just as old if not older than Palop and we have a solid up and coming goalkeeper in Javi Varas who impressed last season when gave the chance.
De Sanctis expressed his displeasure at playing second fiddle to Palop and got his wish to leave after we agreed a deal with Napoli believed to be worth about €1.5m.
Personally I think the deal is good for all parties because it gives Napoli a proven quality and domestic keeper at a considerably cheap price and allows up to recuperate some of the money we’ve spent on Sánchez and Zokora in the past few weeks.
Varas is the future and then we have José Carlos who is another up and coming product of the cantera. We’re not short on keepers and De Sanctis was clearly surplus to requirements. Another good move by Monchi.
