Martin Jol Quits Spurs…is Juande Leaving?
By: Ryan | October 25th, 2007When I got home from classes today and turned on FSC, I was pleasantly surprised to find the Tottenham-Getafe game on. I only caught the last 15 minutes of it, in which Getafe held off Spurs to win 2-1. ¡Aupa Geta!
This game brought forth the end of the Martin Jol era at Spurs, as he stepped down from the club before the match. No big deal right?
It’s a big deal if you are a Sevilla fan!! Juande Ramos has been linked with the Tottenham job all along, and now we will see if all of the rumors and ‘cotilleos’ have been true. I want to say that Juande’s style is not set for the English game, that he isn’t ready to go over to England, yadda yadda yadda, but that is not true.
Juande came over to Sevilla in 2005 from Malaga upon the departure of Joaquin Caparros. Ramos won the UEFA Cup his first year against Middlesbrough 4-0 and then the European Supercup by defeating Barcelona 3-0.
A UEFA Cup repeat against Espanyol on penalties in 2006, a 3rd place finish in La Liga, and a Supercopa de España win made Juande Ramos a rather popular coach down in Andalucia.
The Telegraph says that Spurs are certain to replace Jol with the manchego.
Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, has been unable to hide his disappointment at the team’s worst start for 19 years. As early as August he was linked with a move for Ramos, who claimed at the time that he was committed to Sevilla.
Ramos has steered Sevilla to successive Uefa Cup triumphs, beating Middlesbrough in the final in Eindhoven in 2006 and Espanyol, in Glasgow, in May. The club are in this season’s Champions League and are in a healthy position to qualify for the knockout stages.
The death of Antonio Puerta, Sevilla’s 22-year-old midfielder, in August hit the club badly and it was felt it would be difficult for Ramos to leave so quickly after the tragedy. However, in the Primera Liga, Sevilla have struggled and are presently 11th with just nine points, and the offer from Tottenham is too tempting for the Spaniard to turn down.
Tottenham were unable to provide any satisfactory explanation for photographs of a meeting between then vice-chairman Paul Kemsley, club secretary John Alexander, Ramos and his agent, Alvaro Torres, published by Seville newspaper Estadio Deportivo in August.
Spurs denied they had met with Ramos, but the coach claimed that, through a third party, Spurs had made him an “excellent, dizzying offer”. He later back-tracked, but the link with the Spaniard refused to go away.
These rumors have been circulating for some time now and finally we will see if there is any truth or not.
I for one will be hoping that come tomorrow, I don’t see the headline ‘Juande Ramos new manager at Spurs-
Or Sevilla will have a long climb ahead.

Hi Ryan…
I am sorry to disappoint, but I think Ramos is already marked as the new manager. Rumours are that he was at the stadium finalising a contract during the Getafe match… do you know if that is/could be true?

I haven’t heard a thing from the Spanish press yet, and they are normally all over this type of juicy gossip. All I’ve seen today were articles in the English press.
The Times had this to say (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/tottenham/article2741595.ece)
Ramos said that he will remain at Seville until the end of his contract in the summer, but Tottenham have been pursuing him since. They are likely to have offered him considerably more than the £2 million a season that Jol has been earning.
Allen is expected to take temporary charge until Ramos arrives. The Spaniard will be charged with turning around Tottenham’s fortunes, which at present have them in the relegation zone, with expectations of challenging for a place in the Champions League crushed by a series of poor performances.

If he goes..he goes, and there is nothing to stop him. But at least he could stick around the rest of the year. Nothing would upset the already rocky start more than Juande’s departure

A little clarification. It seems the source of the story was the Sun. Although everyone picked up on it. There has been a reliable in the know that has claimed it will be Jurgen. I think most of what is going on here is speculation as the compensation package with Jol was leaked before the game. Because Hughton was known to be canned as well, Gus Poyet was thrown in as the #2. Why I have no idea. You would think Juande would want his own #2, which is why this seems a little BS to me. We’ll just have to wait and see.

And all the garbage consistently comes back to the Sun.
Always a cesspool of rumors and deceit. But once in a while a good looking woman or two.

And apparently Gus Poyet speaks Spanish, thus he would be the ‘translator’ for Juande, as I’ve never heard about his English linguistic ability.
Antonio Álvarez Giráldez who is the second in command now in Sevilla, is 52 and probably won’t be going anywhere. He was around when Caparros was in charge, so he isn’t loyal to Juande (ie came in when he did in 2005)
The English speaker is the key.

I hope that Seville do keep “one day” as I do not want him as Spurs Manager. It is bad enough having players that cannot speak English but to have a Manager that cannot speak English is absurd. To sack Martin Jol and get in an inferior manager does not make sense.

It’s OK, Juande can speak some English but since Chris Hughton has also been sacked, Gus Poyet would become the new No. 2, and act as translator

I thought Ramos spoke English?

I hear he speaks some but with a translator as an assistant much less would slip through the cracks one would hope…. many sports books are no longer taking bets on Ramos taking over Spurs…. odds are at 90%

Aww, crap. It sucks to lose one of the good guys to another league.
What makes me really curious is: who’s going to take over for Juande? Is Del Nido prepared, after the hotel incident earlier this year?
