Maresca Waves his Final Goodbye

By: Anthony | July 12th, 2009

Everyone knew it was coming and now it’s official – Enzo Maresca has been transfered. The Italian was with us for four years and helped us reach the peak of the club’s history where we won our back to back UEFA Cups, Copa del Rey, Supercopa de Europa and Supercopa de España. Maresca had a falling out with Manolo Jiménez earlier this year and had since expressed his desire to leave Nervión. Once Greek champions Olympiakos inquired about Enzo’s situation he jumped at the chance of leaving El Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán for greener pastures. Olympiakos are obviously a top side and of course they don’t play in a league the calibre of La Liga but they are in the Champions League and do considerably well every year.

Today Enzo sat down in a press conference held in Sevilla where he said his final goodbye’s to the fans, the club, and the city. Of course he came in dressed stylishly like a typical Italian and explained that he renewed his contract at the beginning of the year because the way things were going he planned to retire in Sevilla. Of course we know that since his public critique of Manolo Jiménez things have been a bit more difficult for Maresca and he has struggled to see much playing time.

Personally I wish Enzo Maresca all the best in Greece and will never forget the numerous times he has captained this beloved club as well as the unforgettable 2 goals he scored against Middlesboro in the UEFA Cup final way back in 2006 where we cruised to a 4-0 victory. I will also never forget the penalty he smashed in to top off our 3-0 thumping of Barcelona in Monaco to win the UEFA European Supercopa (I’m sure all Barça fans remember this quite well too!).

¡Nos Vemos Maresca!

He used to be one of my favourite players on the team. Second only to Navas and Javi Navarro.

Classy player, it’s a shame to see La Liga lose him.

mmm…. not to be a nay-sayer here. and i realize we’re all nostaligic because of his huge contributions.

BUT. maresca was anything but classy. he was a pretty dirty player whose stupid bludners and red cards probably cost us a champions league spot last year (still bitter about us losing to atletico madrid in the enzo headbut game). it was also a total BS move to call for the head of your coach midseason even if you do have problems with him.

so i have no hard feelings with him. i hope he does well in greece. but i wont miss him. it was time for him and the team to move on.

Totally agreed SRH, I never said I would miss him and I obviously realize his stupid mistakes, especially in the past couple seasons but at the same time, give respect where respect is due and Maresca definitely contributed a lot to this club over the past four years. Like you said, it was time for everyone to move on.

We wish him all the best.
