Málaga 2-2 Sevilla; “The Deadly Duo”

By: Anthony | March 16th, 2009

So this will have to be another quick post as 1) I’m in the Dominican on a shitty server that barely works which makes me miss my Macbook like crazy and 2) I didn’t see the game, only read several reviews and saw some brief highlights.

Luis Fabiano and Fredi Kanoute were paired back together yesterday and played the whole game for the first time over a month.

It seems like they showed the same form yesterday that they showed last year. We went down by two goals in the first half but our two star strikers levelled the score in the second half. From what I read it seems like we dominated the match and it would have been a deserved victory but considering Malaga’s recent form I’ll take the draw. Surely this come from behind victory will be a huge boost for the boys and despite not winning the match, we should definitely keep our heads held high when returning back to Sevilla.

With Villarreal’s loss to Atletico we now sit firmly in third place and in a good position to qualify for next year’s Champions League. We also now maintain our strong league form and have some very winnable games coming up in the following weeks which doesn’t mean anything considering how erratic we’ve been all year but it looks like the team is finally coming together nicely. I can definitely see us closing in on second place and with a bit of luck and determination I think we can definitely be there.

I’ll be in the Dominican until early Saturday so if I have time to do a preview for next week I definitely will but if not I apologize. I will though of course have a review of next week’s match as I’ll be home to see it.

    holy. crap.

we just played AMAZINGLY. yes, it was only valladolid. but i cant remember the last time ive seen sevilla dominate a game that thoroughly. even when valladolid pulled momentarily even at 1 a piece, i had no doubt the way we were playing that this game was ours to take. some quick notes….

kanoute: wow. only thing was i think it was him who blew the coverage on valladolid’s goal… but i mean, the guy scored three CLASSY goals. each totally different. one a great little break into the box off a pass, the second, an amazing volley, and the third a perfectly finished header. this guy is incredible. we should feel blessed to have him on our team and to get to watch him. hope all this garbage about english teams pursuing doesnt amount to anything.

fabiano: that new hair style (maybe its not new, just that i havent caught a game for a while). is TERRIBLE. but he looked very good. very nice goal, and very very nearly had the other (off the post).

Kone: good to see him on the field. not htat he had a big impact, and not that i really know what i excpect him to contribute to this season barring (god forbid) an injury to kanoute or fabiano… but nice that he’s back after missing so much time.

Perotti: this guy is AWESOME. i am totally amazed by how he plays. hes a rookie?!?! he plays like a ten year vet. he plays with poise that i think diego capel can only dream of (on that note, its very interesting how perotti seems to have passed capel on the depth chart, i cant disagree at all). perotti has an amazing sense of hte field and is a beautiful passer. really, this kid is fantastic.

navas: fantastic game. glad, as the game got chippy towards the end, he didnt get hurt. was starting to get nervous.

romaric: excellent. great assist on the first goal.

adriano: can we just play him in the back all the time? does anyone really think that mosquera is a better defender than adriano? hope his injury wasnt serious.

renato: not good. seriously. time to consistently start perotti.

palop: some good saves. not his fault on the goal. but he got BAILED OUT by drago on a totally bizarre mistake, kicking a short clearance straight to a valladolid player on the edge of the box. then coming out of goal to cut off a shooting angle and getting totally beat, only for drago to clear the ball from danger. very weird sequence from palop that another team would’ve likely punished us for. luckily we were up 4-1 at the time, but in a closer game that could’ve been bad.

on the whole. im just so glad to see us play so well and dominate so thoroughly. im not really sure what we’re realistically hoping for this season (aside from obviously the champs league, and it would be nice to at very least be in the 3 spot, where we dont have to qualify in). im not holding my breath fora top 2 finish, but it’s still fun to think about. regardless, after a season with somereal frustration, its gotta be good for the players and the club….

ok… enough rambling. go watch some highlights and enjoy!

what a complete match. for the first time in a while, i was thoroughly pleased to be able to sit back and savour a victory DURING THE MATCH. it was looking like maybe villarreal might drop a couple points against athletic, but they got the win, so it was good to see us hold serve as well (tennis analogy!). they’ll be digging deep when they have to play arsenal in the CL, so hopefully they will drop a few points during our valencia, barça, RM week-of-death. *shudder*
