In a World Full of Barça and Real Fans – People are Stupid

By: Anthony | April 6th, 2009

Thanks Ryan for the Picture!

I never watch Spanish news, they’re as pro-Barça and pro-Real as American news is with the Yankees or Red Sox. It’s the same thing over and over so why bother right? Barça did this and Real did that, blah, blah, blah.

Earlier today I headed down to my grandmother’s apartment located a quiet neighborhood in downtown Toronto. When I was there she gave me food (typical Spanish!) and we sat down and just talked about how she’s been and her upcoming trip to Spain. As she left the living room to go get some more wine I turned on her TV and since she has Spanish satellite I was browsing through some of the channels that we don’t usually get here on regular cable. I saw the football news on Antena 3 and decided to just watch the highlights from this past weekend’s La Liga round-up.

Now as I stated before, the Spanish media is probably one of the most biased in the world of sports, especially when it comes to Real Madrid and Barcelona, the two jewels in the crown that is La Liga.

After all the highlights I was listening to them analyze the Jornada (round) and the whole title race in general. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Spanish television, Antena 3 is based out of Madrid, and I’m sure you know where I’m going with this…

The two men who were doing the news basically stated that 6 points is a very small margin and Real has a good a chance as any to catch Barça who has hit a few bumps in the past month or so. This is a very true statement and a couple slip ups could see Real take the title for a record 32nd time but this isn’t the statement I had a problem with. They said it was a “2 horse race” and that us (Sevilla), Villarreal, Atlético, Málaga, Valencia and Deportivo are all in the race for “the final two Champions League spots”.

This is where I’m confused. Apparently we have no chance to win the title because we’re 9 points behind Real which is a significant enough margin to be considered as “not in the race” but then Villarreal is 9 points behind us so surely what these two clowns on Antena 3 should be saying is this:

While Barcelona is leading the league, Real Madrid has a good a chance as any to catch them and win the title. Sevilla is cemented in the third Champions League spot and Villarreal will be looking to hold off competition from Atlético, Málaga, Valencia and Deportivo la Coruña to hold down the final spot.

I mean technically if 9 points is too wide a gap for us to be considered in the title race (which I do agree with, I understand that point) then surely it’s also too much for any other team to overtake us in third. If not well then okay look at it this way. We’re still in the title race bitches. Nine points is nothing? Okay, we close the nine point margin on Real and we’re tied for second spot now. Now since we’re tied for that second spot that automatically means we’re in the title race too does it not?

Am I really blowing this way out of proportion? Probably. Even though I’m more than used to this ridiculous bias, it’s still highly entertaining to see how these idiots think.

I love you Sevilla, I love you.

(Disclaimer, I’m a Barca fan.) It’s called stroking your audiences ego. Even though they’re second, it still makes them feel good to hear that their team is still “different than the rest”, you know? Barcelona stations would likely do the same if in that position, unfortunately. (And yeah… you’re making too much out of this.)

Still, I feel for you, in my local league, my team has been in a similar position for the last 15 years: being grossly ignored while the “Big Two” are talked about as if they’re the only two damn teams in the league. Even when someone else is on top, the media talks about it as if it’s only a matter of time before they’re overtaken by the “Big Boys”. Blah.

It’s true it really annoys me too how every article is about Real Mierda and Barca. Its the same in Italy, the two milans. Im a bit of a Roma fan and we came second in the league but still received less coverage than AC Milan who came fifth and a lower rating in Fifa 09!!!lol

in turkey the news reporters constantly bash on the big thee clubs(galatasaray, besiktas, fenerbahce) and always talk about the pros of the littler teams. everytime one of those clubs loses all the talk about is the waste of money on the players they bought etc etc.

it gets annoying after a while, id rather have a reporter that doesn’t like any team to be honest, sorta like on sportscenter.

I guess no matter what league we talk about we see the same situation in the media – everything is catered towards the big boys.

Corey, what conspiracy theories do you speak of? It’s merely a statement.

I’m deciding against using any sarcasm, and yes, it is still possible that Sevilla could take the title. But with 27 possible points left, away games in Barcelona, Valencia, Villarreal and Osasuna, and Real Madrid and Deportivo filling in two of the other matches, the likelihood of Sevilla winning 5 more games than Barcelona is pretty slim.

Real Madrid are a much more reasonable target, but even if Sevilla win all of their remaining matches, Madrid would have to concede 3 (including the one against Sevilla) and draw another. So that would require Real Madrid to go 5-3-1, while they haven’t currently lost in 15 matches (13-0-2). It’s a far from impossible task, but you can surely understand why people are betting against it.

So yeah, I think you’re reaction is a little over the top, but can understand why you don’t like your team being prematurely counted out of the competition. On the other hand, as a Sevilla fan shouldn’t you relish the set up? Every one disregards them, under-rates them, and then they triumph and make the smug pundits eat their words. If you think about it that way, then getting all bent out of shape almost confirms their assumptions, if you were confident the team could rise above, you wouldn’t care what those idiots were saying!

Look John no one enjoys their team being slagged off. Especially when they’re doing really well and have only lost one more time than Real Madrid

Oh, I completely understand. That’s why I wrote “[I] can understand why you don’t like your team being prematurely counted out of the competition.” But I still think there’s a reason people are doubting that they’ll finish higher than third this season (which, by the way, is a pretty damn good finish!). And not to rub it in, but what happens if Freddy stops scoring?

I agree with everything you said John, the only people who have high expectations for Sevilla are us Sevillistas. It’s amazing to pull a few upsets against Real, Barça et al.

If Freddy stops scoring then we could be in some deep trouble, we don’t have a sufficient back up striker because I really don’t rate Koné or Chevantón as much as I do Kanouté. Fabiano has been spending a lot of time on the injury table recently so he’s another unreliable player. I’m sure the problem will be assessed in the summer.

In much the same way you feel that living in a world of Barca and Real fans is trying, I live in a world where 9 out of every 10 people on this website despise Real Madrid. How do you think that feels? I got gang banged by 30 people on the Valencia blog for telling them to lay off!

as for the 3rd striker… goal.com which is garbage and accurately predicts approximately 0% of transfers, says we’ll go after negredo on almeria… which’d be awesome.

they also have us looking at zenden from marseille (alluding to the possibility of diego capel leaving).

i think those are both crap rumors.

id rather see an attacking central midfielder. we’ve discussed this elsewhere, our wings are fine. and a world class right back.

Anthony I disagree about Cheva he was so good in the preseasons so when he isnt injured hes really good and on the roma blog wanted him as a striker because he is really good when hes not injured

Sevilla are 15(9+6) points behind Barcelona where as Madrid is only 6 points away. Madrid is yet to play Barcelona at the Camp Nou, so it could potentially down to 3 points from 8 games where as Sevilla has to hope Barca pick up only 12 points from the possible 27 and will all their games. I don’t know what’s wrong in what they said? Everyone said Madrid are out of the race after the camp now match when we were trailing them by 12 points and you lot expect the anyone to believe you’re still in it with 15 points behind the leaders?

I agree Theo, if you read my posts from 2008 I rated Cheva highly and thought he did an amazing job in the pre-season. The problem is he’s way too injury prone and spends more time on the treatment table than on the pitch…

Alex, I think you got your words a bit mixed up. Real did play Barça at the Camp Nou already. I’m not trying to say we’re in the title race as much as I’m trying to say that the two reporters are robbing Sevilla of our success thus far. If we’re 15 points back of Barça and we can’t catch them what makes Atlético strong enough to catch us considering they’re 11 points behind or even Villarreal who are 9 points back. What I had a problem with is the fact that they said there are 6 teams fighting for the final two Champions League spots. Really? I don’t see where they saw these 6 teams. Atlético may catch Villarreal but let’s be honest, we’re pretty far ahead from the rest of the competition.

Without getting cocky or arrogant, I don’t see how we can’t finish third by the end of this year and maybe if we’re lucky get a bit closer to second or claim it. That would just be a bonus though, CL qualification was our goal and we’ve basically achieved it.

Yea, I think Sevilla have pretty much secured the 3rd spot and fourth spot is up for grabs for teams like Valencia, Atletico and Villarrea.

Although i was an avid sevilla fan i only recently discovered this post but i think cheva (if he ever gets off the treatment table!) could make a brilliant super sub to replace adriano/Navas and go triple striker or just take off Kanoute or Fabiano

gosh we could rest tomorrow night up 12 in the 3rd spot. thanks villareal! take a look at the recent streaks for each of the teams below us: villareal has lost 3 of 4 in la liga, málaga was winless in 4 of 5, valencia having only won 2 of 7, and atlético winning 1 of 4. we have been steadily pulling away for about a month now having won 6 of 7. only RM has a longer undefeated streak. that’s pretty damn awesome. we’ll hopefully keep it going tomorrow.

I agree Theo, I think Cheva is an awesome supersub and he proved it a few times earlier this season before he was injured again.

Thanks Aaron for those statistics, definitely putting those in the Getafe preview ;)
