High Expectations
By: Anthony | October 7th, 2008
This past weekend Athletic Bilbao was handed a 4-0 thrashing by the hands of who else, but Sevilla. 4 goals by 4 different players on a night where we could do nothing wrong. Jesús Navas was the man of the match, creating almost every chance we had, and always causing havoc with the defence. A poor performance from Maresca though who was EXTREMELY selfish at most times of the match and as it progressed Kanouté was clearly growing impatient and annoyed.
Bilbao did get off to a stronger start though, but football is one of those games where if you don’t put away your chances you will be punished, and Athletic Club did find this out the hard way. Navas capitalised on some horrible defending when he stole the ball, led a 2 on 1 counter-attack, slipped the ball off to Kanouté and from about a couple meters from the net it was all gravy from there. Fifteen minutes later it was Navas again, providing a beautiful ball into the box, where Renato scored a beautiful diving header goal to put us up 2-0 going into the break. The second half was still dominated by Sevilla, and Athletic was just trying to hold on and keep the game tight; these tactics however did not last very long at all. On the 76th minute the game was put away when We displayed what football is all about. Maresca, Kanouté, Renato, Maresca again, and finally to Adriano, for a beautiful GOLAZZO. The build up play was simply amazing, from end to end in all of 10 seconds and finished off beautifully. And just as if Bilbao hadn’t endured enough suffering, Konko put what seemed to be a harmless cross into the box, only for the Athletic defence to once again be extremely poor, and of course my boy Chevantón was there for the easy tap in.
With this 4-0 victory it is officially Sevilla’s best start to a season in the history of the club. 14 points from 6 games only dropping points to Racing and Betis (hijo de puta). We currently sit third in the table only behind Valencia and Villareal who have also both been quite amazing this season. With such a great start, one can only expect the stakes to get higher and also the expectations. Our main goal at the beginning of the season was to get a Champions League place, but I don’e see why we cannot push for more and try and win the league. Adriano has come out saying that it should be our goal and that we are more than capable of doing so, but Jímenez has said it’s much too early to think about it. Whilst I agree partially with both men, I know we can beat any team on our day.
Vamos Campeón!!!
