Gámez Signs Until 2013

By: Anthony | July 12th, 2009

Yesterday it was officially announced that Jesús Gámez was officially a property of Sevilla Fútbol Club as he arrived from Málaga in a deal which sees both Lolo and Duda head in the opposite direction.

We have failed to have a solid right sided defender since the departure of Dani Alves about a year ago and it was clearly our weak spot this season. Konko didn’t live up to the expectations he had when arriving from Genoa last summer and Mosquera was well below-par hence his transfer to Mexican side América early last week.

Gámez was clearly one of Málaga’s best players last season as they just failed to qualify for the Europa League in their first season in La Liga after finishing 8th. Before last season started there was massive interest in Gámez from other top European clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Valencia. Jesús stated that he held out for a move to us because he preferred the location of Sevilla and was more motivated by our Champions League football.

The deal was said to be easy as both presidents previously had a solid relationship and Málaga were keen to acquire Lolo and Duda who spent last season there and hope to use them in their push for Europe this season. Both of our loanees impressed during their time last year and were key parts of the starting XI who helped our Andalucían neighbours almost qualify for Europe.

Although Jiménez isn’t ready to totally give up on Konko yet, there is no doubt that Gámez has been brought in to give us strength down the right side – strength which we so desperately needed. To be fair, Konko was injured a lot of last season and he could still turn out to be a decent player for us but Gámez is a proven talent in La Liga and one of the most sought after defenders in Spain and it’s a huge bonus that he is also Spanish – something I love to see in the squad.

Lolo was a good young prospect but considering he wouldn’t have fit into Jiménez’ plans, it was good to sell him and get someone worth while in return. It was obvious that the right back spot needed to be addressed in this transfer window and Gámez is more than a quality signing in my eyes.

Monchi’s clear objective this transfer window was to add strength to the squad and with the signings of Zokora and now Gámez, his objective seems to be met.

All we needed is gamez, anthony, is Konko leaving? I hope not I want him to stay as a sub-rb, is there a chance of this?

people you might think I’m idiot but I think we should sell fabiano to milan, he doesn’t perform at sevilla as much as he does for brazil and I believe we shold change the formation into a 4-2-3-1 kanoute is the one up front with a trio of navas renato capel behind him.

Konko is staying, yes, obviously we will need a stand-in RB and since Adriano is a left footer and clearly better on the left side, Konko will most likely be that guy.

How can you say that Fabiano underperforms in Sevilla? He was the leading scorer in La Liga until the last match two seasons ago and he eventually finished runner up to Dani Güiza who ended up winning the Pichici. You must remember that he was injured much of last season and when he was healthy Kanouté was usually injured. Together they are phenomenal, one of the best strike partnerships in the world, but we need them both to stay healthy for that to be effective. If we can get the 30 million Euros we are asking for him then I won’t mind seeing him leave but that is also on the condition that we sign Negredo or another highly skilled proven striker. It won’t hurt us to sell him to Milan because they are not direct competition like Real or Barça but at the same time we must hold out and get his full market value, we can’t be taken ransom by any other team.

I want to get as much money for him as we could and now Man City are gonna offer more than Milan, and I wanted him to stay in the first place, but if he and his agent are saying that he wants to go to Milan, I don’t want a player that doesn’t want to stay on the team if we get this money for him, it could do miracles, I am praying for him to stay but not if he has no desire to stay

I think we need fabiano and building on aquismaia’s idea of 4-2-3-1 we could have a 4-1-2-1-2

    Palop
    Gamez Squillaci Escude Adriano
    Zokora/Duscher(Sub)
    Navas Perotti
    Romaric/Renato (in future Acosta
    Kanoute Fabiano and Armenteros)

Aquismaia, I’m not sure if you watched the latter half of last season but Perotti was definitely ahead of Capel in the pecking order. His performances spoke for themselves as he brought something totally new to La Liga while Capel stayed the one-trick pony he is. Capel is good no doubt, be he has to be a bit more creative to progress as a player in my opinion.

I think Zokora and Romaric in an all Ivorian connection in the midfield will provide a pretty unique attacking option for us as Romaric has settled in nicely now and Zokora is full of energy. They also know each other from their respective national team so taking time to get used to each other won’t be necessary as Zokora will slide right into the starting XI nicely. I’m really looking forward to this season.

I’m just glad that we’re getting our targets. Although I’m not a fan of the Zokora signing, I will never doubt Monchi. I’m just worried that in the crucial month of January, where we’ll most likely still be in the Copa del Rey, we’ll be without Zokora, Romaric, Kanoute, and maybe even Kone, who will all be going to the African Cup of Nations. That’s why I think we shouldn’t even be considering selling Fabiano. Also, I would’ve hoped this swap deal included Apoño, so we could have more depth in midfield. But all in all, so far so good. I just wish Fuentes (Fabiano’s agent) would keep his mouth shut.

edinho, i forgot there’s the africa cup of nations, of now the team will go shaky when those players leave, but I’m hopeful that duscher and renato would step up, one question, do we still own chevanton?

We still own Chevanton, but I get the feeling that his time is up. He’s already been linked with Espanyol & Fiorentina.

Anyway i think with chevanton-he’s spent most of the last few years on the medical table and we dont really need him. I think the best thing we can do is sell cheva and with the money from him and maresca buy oneyoung forward and one who’s slightly more experienced because kanoute is going to lose his form soon(he’s 31) and fabiano’s 28 so i think we need to get rid of cheva keep kone for a couple of seasons and then sell him off along with kanoute (he’ll be 33-34 by then or if he’s still good keep him) and gradually give the new strikers more playing time.

I would like to see him come here so we would not have to play renato and adriano as strikers when fabiano is injured and kanoute and kone are at the africa cup of nations

curious… but would you all really rather have adriano starting at left back than freddi navarro? he was very solid last year. adriano might be able to attack more out of the back though. it gives us two different attacking philosophies/looks though.

and im still very unresolved in the romaric/renato debate. i find renato SO frustrating and would probably prefer romaric to partner with his fellow ivoirian…

    for me that leaves

    palop
    gamez escude squillaci adriano/navarro
    navas zokora perotti
    romaric
    fabiano kanoute

Navarro is a great player but Adriano is better, I think he showed that last year and all should agree on this point he played in every position except for playing as a goal keeper but when palop retires he’ll be our goalie :P
