Deportivo 0-3 Sevilla a.k.a. GAME OVER

By: Anthony | January 14th, 2009

It is true, things come in threes. Three consecutive victories over Deportivo la Coruña in less than a week must signal that things are headed up for us. Today was really our day, right from the beginning we never showed a single minute of letting up, also a good sign that we’re getting back to the old Sevilla, the one that conquered Europe some 2 years ago.

Navas set the tone for the game in the first minute when he struck a volley beating Fabricio. On the 23rd minute Luis Fabiano added to the Galician’s pain as he capitalized off a defensive error, stole the ball, walked it around Fabricio, and slotted it in with ease. O Fabuloso put the first nail in the coffin on the 40th minute when the two Depor defenders crashed into each other and Fabiano was there to chip it over Fabricio, the game was over before we even reached half time.

It was definitely an encouraging display of football as everyone was getting some touches in and Depor didn’t really have any promising opportunities. Once again Jesús Navas was controlling the left flank and causing havoc every time he touched the ball, and with Capel doing the exact same on the left side, Depor didn’t know what to do. Fabiano and Kanouté were in sync and always a threat to the Depor defense, Romaric and Duscher plugged up the midfield so they couldn’t attack through there and when they finally managed to penetrate that, Crespo, Escudé, Squillaci, and Fernando Navarro played solid along the back line. A all round solid performance by my boys tonight.

On the 68th minute Omar Bravo went in studs up on Romaric which meant he was ejected with a straight red. There was no end to Depor’s troubles tonight, BELIEVE ME!!

In the 75th minute came my highlight of the match. My boy Chevantón was finally back from his knee injury that has kept him sidelined since October. If you’ve read my blog since I started you’d know that I absolutely love Cheva and think he’s the best supersub since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. His return will hopefully spark some more goals to come in the future, but for now it was for something else.

Palop got a straight red on the 82nd minute for tripping up the Depor striker and was given a straight red. Since all three substitutions had already been made by Manolo Jiménez it meant that a player on the field would have to play in goal for the remaining 8 minutes plus added time and also for the penalty. Chevantón stepped up and volunteered to play in goal knowing that he would first have to face a penalty shot. Up stepped Pablo Álvarez and tried to place the goal in the bottom left corner but struck the post and then went out for a goal kick. What a series of events in the final minutes, probably the most exciting game this whole season.

The boys ended the game in style just killing time and passing the ball around. Will Depor just go away now? I’m sick of writing about them and seeing them, we’ve beat you three times, we’ve finished our business with you. We now move on to the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey but are not sure who we will face yet. Whoever it is, they better watch out, because with the way they’re playing, I can’t off the top of my head think of a team that can stop us.

With 3 victories in less than a week surely our confidence must be sky rocketing by now right? We now travel back to Nervión to take on strugglers Numancia in a game that means a lot. We must build off our win last weekend to Depor and try and get our league campaign back on track and running. Barça may be out of sight but I’d consider it a great insult if Real Mierda finished ahead of us, they’ve been awful this year.

There’s some big news going on in Nervión, I meant to actually post it yesterday but I ended up doing the review for the game instead. Look out for tomorrow’s entry!!!

¡¡VAMOS MI SEVILLA
VAMOS CAMPEÓN!!

just wanna say that i watched the game on rojadirecta and it worked fantastically. thanks for the tip!

i think chevanton coming back is HUGE. people have been pissed about us playing with one striker but we’ve had so few options. and both fabiano and kanoute have been banged up. so a third legitimate striker is gonna be a really big deal for giving those front two rests from time to time, such as in the copa del rey…

frustrating about the red to palop. so he’ll miss the first game of the next round then? sure he could use the rest too and javi varas should be fine for a match.

impressive win, though we should remember that two of those were garbage gift goals. even still we dominated and controlled the game, and if we had really wanted im sure we could have pressed the issue and gotten some more goals. great game!

No probs SRH, some of the streams lag a bit but hey, it’s better than nothing.

I’ve always loved Cheva, I think he’s fantastic to have come off the bench and is always dangerous when near goal. And like you said, it’ll be good to give Freddie and Luis a break once in a while, maybe even this weekend against Numancia considering they’ve both played almost 3 full games in less than a week.

Palop’s red is more than frustrating, but it ended up being worth it I guess. Sure, he’ll be suspended for two matches but Javi Varas is a very talented goalkeeper with a lot of potential, he was world class in pre-season and it’ll be good for him to get some time now. Also it’s always good to keep a clean sheet and even though it came at a price, at least it was done.

You’re right, two of our goals were gifts but hey, it’s not like we didn’t work for them, Fabiano had the determination to pressure the defense into giving up those balls and like you said, at any time of they game we could have easily snatched another goal or two!!

Aaron, if you like I can set up a comments page during the match like they do over at the Barça Offside and we can discuss the match while it’s being played. Just a suggestion, let me know if you’re interested.

wow didn’t realize he misses two games. thats a bit rough. so he’ll miss both the games against valencia? tough matchup. i’ll admit i was hoping for something more along the lines of espanyol or valladolid. but we’re in good enough form now we should be ok.

as for a live thread, that’d be fun. i couldnt come too consistently but id stop by.

looking ahead the next five games for sevilla are VERY winnable. i cant pick out a single one right now where i’d be content with a tie. Numancia (H), Racing (H), Gijon (A), Betis (H), Espnayol (A)… i still think of racing as a tough team, but going by the standings the toughest of those games will likely be against the freshmen Gijon, who probably aren’t too intimidated by us after the barnburner 4-3 win we had at home. we’ll see.

anyone know where those copa del rey games slot in?

answered my own questions: games are the next two weeks (three in fact counting the first tie of the following round, should we pass through). wow. no repose. guess its good to play valencia twice while our liga schedule is on the less difficult side.

and again that just makes it that much more critical to have chevanton back. any word on acosta?

and have any of you heard the rumors that sevilla is after Pennant at liverpool but might have to give up on Navaro? mixed feelings. Pennant has been a behavior concern most places he’s played at, navaro has been a pro. but we’ll see.

Pennant for Navarro??? Where did you hear that?? Even in Sevilla that hasn’t been mentioned!!! Just pure gossip to fill out space, in my opinion. Sounds like the one from last year, Roberto Gomez (from Marca) in Spain was sure that Navas was going to Liverpool. He would practice in Sevilla, to be with his family, and play over the weekend with Liverpool!! What a bunch of BS!!!

What is hot is that De Mul is being loaned to Genk in Belgium, and that Mosquera might end up in River Plate.

    Saludos!!

this one didn’t mention the possibility of a navarro swap, another one did.

    http://www.goal.com/en/news/1708/ac-milan/2009/01/14/1060423/milan-fighting-off-sevilla-for-pennant-deal

but it talks about pennant. i agree. i don’t put much weight in the gossip. but when there isn’t much else to talk about, its entertaining.

the de mul and mosquera stuff is interesting in terms of revenue for the team, but not really for this current year or how it is currently constituted.

this seems like a more gossipy source than goal.com, but this puts the two together. though it also says it isn’t terribly likely.

btw. is there an actual discussion board on this site as opposed to just comments on blog posts?
