A question for The Offsiders
By: Ryan | October 18th, 2007Since I’m a bit bogged down at the moment with school, and all of the readers and posters here are insanely knowledgeable, I figuered I would pose a question to all of you. This was influenced by Isaiah’s last post on Barça.
Can anyone explain just what happens when the younger players have to play a certain number of minute to be a part of a team? As the case is now with Bojan Krkic? I know he has to play one more minute to be a player for Barça’s first team, but how many minutes do they have to play?
I normally spend all my time looking things like this up, but can’t this week. Also, what is the deal with the contracts and when they can leave, etc. In this article from El Pais they talk about Merida leaving before he was 15, then waiting till he was 16. I’m not clear on what the deal is there, but most people have commented on it already from Isaiah’s post.
And what do you think about the Cantera system in general? Do you think it’s flawed by having clubs essentially raise these players as both kids and as footballers, and then they get up and leave when they are 16 or 15 in the case of some of the young players? Sure, Arsenal paid 1 million for Cesc, but who wouldn’t? Look at the stud he has become at Arsenal. That my friend is 1 million well spent. Can clubs contract an 8 year old? Or at what point is that ridiculous?
A bunch of random questions, but hopefully will spark some discussion.
