A Perfect end to the Beginning

By: Anthony | November 18th, 2008

As we all know, the next four weeks are going to be extremely difficult for us and not only are we playing Valencia, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Villareal but also factor in the UEFA Cup and the Copa del Rey and we’re extremely busy and are bound to be fatigued. Our match against Getafe in Madrid was always going to be a tricky one but it was a must win. We walked out of the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez with all 3 points thanks to a beautiful goal from the “back on track” Luis Fabiano, who was fresh off his hat-trick from our 4-0 demolishing of SD Ponferradina in the Copa del Rey and my boy Tom de Mul capped it off with his first every goal as a Sevillista which came in the 91st minute.

Getafe actually for the first 25 minutes looked like the team more likely to score as they were out-running and out-playing us but this all changed in the 26th minute when Mosquera fouled Gavilán in the box which in turn gave Getafe the chance to pull ahead with a penalty kick. But Palop stepped up, dove to his right and stopped Granero’s penalty that lacked any power or direction. The game from here on in was all about Sevilla and in the 34th minute Luis Fabiano hit a bullet which Abbondanzieri could only tip over the bar. It only took two minutes later for Sevilla to get the goal we deserved which came from a beautiful pass by Romaric whom at half slotted it through the Getafe midfield and defence only for O Fabuloso to touch it around the keeper and tap it in.

The second half was mostly played in Getafe’s end but no real threatening chances were created. Romaric was substituted in the 85th minute for Tom de Mul and in the first minute of injury time Maresca was involved in a battle around the half way line in which both players stumbled fighting for the ball, luckily Tommy was there to pick up the loose ball, run it all the way to the net and slot it through the legs of Abbondanzieri to score his first ever goal playing in the famous jersey of Sevilla.

If you read my blog regularely you will know that I have somewhat of a man crush on De Mul and think he’s a tremendous player and nothing made me more excited to see him score his first goal, to be honest I think I was more excited than he was. Right after he scored he got an loud reception from the traveling Sevillistas and of course the rest of the team. Hopefully Tom can go on from here and score a couple more throughout the season and also really prove himself as a serious player on this Sevilla team.

I will have a preview posted for our game against Valencia probably on Friday. Like I said, its the perfect end to the beginning. We needed this confidence booster and win to hopefully carry on playing good football because we all know in the next four weeks that nothing less will get us these valuable points.
