Sevilla v Athletic Club Copa del Rey Preview; “Good news, for Once”

By: Anthony | February 3rd, 2009

Tomorrow will be the second time we have played Athletic Bilbao this season, the first resulting in an emphatic 4-0 victory for us.

Tomorrow is guaranteed to be anything but an emphatic victory either way. Athletic is currently on a high, and exceeding expectations in their recent league performances, us on the other hand are the total opposite. We have had a recent run of poor results, and although we haven’t lost them all, we are definitely much below expectation and as a result, victory tomorrow in the Copa del Rey is absolutely vital, not only for our cup hopes, but for Jiménez’ job and the well-being of the team.

Hopefully Jiménez will field a stronger more attacking lineup tomorrow as Adriano, and Mosquera are all back to full training and included in the squad for tomorrow’s match. Luis Fabiano is still out and has returned to Brasil to undergo surgery.

Some other good news out of Nervión today as club doctor Adolfo Muñoz annouced that Koné has fully recovered from that terrible injury he suffered whilst playing a friendly for his native country – Ivory Coast. He will resume full training by the end of this week and suspected to return to full fitness by the end of the month. This is particularly good for us and although I never really rated him as a good striker, well, remember this in preseason? Insanity.

At least if nothing else he’ll provide some goals.

The key to tomorrow’s match is coming out of it with a substantial lead because I am not looking forward to playing in San Mames, if we can squeak out a draw there I’ll be satisfied. I think Jiménez who has been under recent criticism will start more of an attacking lineup because he acknowledged earlier this week that our main problem has been scoring goals. Admitting your problems is the first step and now that he has done this hopefully he’ll make attempts to rectify the situation.

I’ll have a follow up tomorrow night.

¡¡Vamos mi Sevilla
Vamos Campeón!!

tough conditions out there today. there’s going to be some luck involved in the goals no matter how they go down.

Acosta on for Renato. Thank God, Renato was totally out of it today and didn’t do anything. I predict 3-1 for us.

i think 3-1 should have been expected from how well we played this half. kanouté should have two goals.

Well deserved victory, can’t really argue about the way we played, that goal for Athletic was unjustified.

well, we deserved more than 2-1 as the commentators noted, but we found our form in the second half at least. acosta played great. i’m just happy we came out on top. it was a just ending. once the grass got faster you could see how much more speed we had than they did.

Yeah, speed is definitely our game, Jiménez needs to make his lineup accordingly, I really hope Acosta will start along Kanouté on the weekend, he compliments him perfectly. Kanouté is a good target man but not quick, Acosta is quick so he can do the running but also score goals. We may have a good partnership on our hands until Luisfa returns. Should have been 3-1, so my prediction was pretty good lol
