Kanouté ‘injured’ in Mali soccer riot

By: Ryan | October 15th, 2007

Ahh my good ol’ days as a Buckeye

Today while wasting a bit of time before class I was wandering through the ebays and quickly read a story that said that Freddy Kanouté was injured during a riot after Mali lost in an African World Cup qualifier 2-1 to Togo. It says in the article that he was ‘kicked in the leg’. Really? Kicked in the leg? That sounds terrible! I’m sure Kanouté has never been kicked in the leg during a game. WOW!

All kidding aside, for those of you who have never been a riot, they are a scary place. I was in the riots at Ohio State when we beat Michigan in 2002. I literally witnessed a car set on fire and tipped over, a newspaper box thrown through the bookstore window, and more mattresses thrown out of windows then I believed to be humanly possible. I wasn’t ever in danger of being killed or anything, but it is an impressive, albeit scary, site when you see how crazy a mob of angry human beings can be.

It made CBC’s website and even made the USA Today paper. Which I found to be interesting since soccer related news never makes it too far.

The article can be summed up by this quip from the fans.

“Give us Frederic Kanoute and Mamadou Bakayoko. We’re going to kill them!”

What is more interesting is that the President of Mali, Osumane Issoufi Maiga didn’t even support his players during this time.

Mali Prime Minister Ousmane Issoufi Maiga went on national radio Monday to congratulate Togo on its victory, and said his government would work to repair the damage caused by his nation’s “unsporting behavior.”

Later Monday, Maiga indicated the players would be punished for the costly loss, saying “all the consequences of the players’ acts will backfire.” He did not elaborate.

Government ministers berated the Mali players, who looked down silently in humiliation, during a state television broadcast on Monday night.

Government spokesman Ousmane Thiam told them they were “a disappointment” and “did not perform to expectations” after the government had spent $775,500 on their transport and lodging.

So wait a second. Mali has a bad game and they lose. The fan’s riot. And the President basically says ‘Our team sucks, you all are a disappointment and a disgrace to our country. And why didn’t you kick Kanouté harder. (whispers) Whats that? (whispers) Oh yeah, you bad rioters you. Don’t NOT stop rioting´

As a plea to the Mali fans, please don’t kill Kanouté, Sevilla desperately need him back. Thanks.

Never a dull moment in football.

—————-UPDATE—————

Go here to check out Bob’s article. Apparently Kanouté needed stitches after he was attacked by a belt.

Actually Kanoute was more than kicked in the leg. He was hit with a belt and had to get four stitches on his back and his teammate was stabbed in the arm… (http://www.theoffside.com/leagues/spain-la-liga/belts-and-international-breaks-are-a-bad-combination.html)

No Togo was winning against Mali 2-1 after scoring a late goal when the game was called off as people started storming the pitch.

    —————The Sevilla Curse———————–

I’ve got a question for you… Is Seville the BEST place in the entire world?

    Let me explain.

Jose Reyes. Now you’re going to laugh when I say this, but I believe that he could have been the best player in the world. Do you remember the amazing form he was in, in the first few months of the 2004-2005 season, until he got kicked all over the place by Gary Neville? He looked unstopable! He would actually dribble past players as if they weren’t there. Also he’d finish any chance put in front of him. Then the curse of Sevilla kicked in. He became despondant with life in England, and with life at Arsenal. He cried out for a return to Spain. He was granted his wish by Real Madrid, when he went there on loan. However, he was hardly amazing there was he? The fact that he scored them vital goals in the last game of the season overshadowed the fact that overall he played crap that season (when he actually played). Now he’s gone to Atletico. Not a bad start there, but you wait… he’ll fade. I am 100% sure that within a few years he’ll be back at Sevilla, and he’ll be back on top of his game.

Julio Baptista. An absolute ‘Beast’ (hence the nickname) whilst at Sevilla. He scored something like 50 goals in 2 seasons. Then he goes to Madrid. He has a terrible season. Barely plays, rarely scores. The year after, he tries his luck at Arsenal. Again; very poor overall. Okay, so he scored 4 goals at Anfield, but that masked the poorness of his season. The curse of Sevilla struck once more. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see him back at Sevilla in a few years.

Fredi Kanoute. He was little more than Ok in England with West Ham and Tottenham. He always seemed to me that he couldn’t be bothered to play. He goes to Sevilla, and in his first year he plays brilliantly, scores lots of goals and wins a Uefa Cup etc. I call this the Reverse Sevilla Curse.

Jesus Navas. A fantastic talent. I’d have him for Pompey any day of the week. And I’m sure he’d get into any major club across Europe (Arsenal, Man U, Barca, Real, Inter, AC etc). But he just doesn’t want to leave Seville! I heard he got homesick just going away for a week or so! Another case of the Sevilla Curse.

So there’s one question on my lips… What do they put into the water?

Well whatever it is, I’d like to try a bit!

And remember… you heard about the Sevilla Curse here first (and the Reverse Sevilla Curse).

So when this psychological ‘disease’ becomes as common as ADHD and Alcoholism etc. you’ll know to look in the B-Man’s direction and thank me for the discovery.

I do however have a cure for the Sevilla Curse. A Spell with Pompey down on the South Coast!!!!!!!!!

Jesus Navas’s deal is that he suffers from a acute homesickness in that he can’t deal from being far away from home for extended periods of time. He’s being treated for it now.

I’d kill to have Baptista back and Reyes too.

Isn’t it intersting that Julio Bapitsta was loaned to Arsenal for Jose Reyes to come back to Spain. Two former Sevillistas in that deal.
