Kanouté Pens Deal Until 2012 – LEGEND!!!
By: Anthony | April 1st, 2009
The local legend himself Frédéric Kanouté has signed a new contract for an additional two years keeping him in Nervión until 2012.
The Mali international’s contract was due to expire at the end of next year and rumours were flying around the press over the past few weeks linking him to AC Milan or a move back to the Premier League. These rumours have now been put to rest with the big man committing his future to us in Sevilla.
Kanouté has been on stunning form over the past month and is our leading scorer this year with 15 goals in all competitions. The partnership he’s formed with Luis Fabiano over the past few years is mouth-watering and if LuFa wasn’t injured for most of this season both men probably would have had way more goals to their tally.
This is amazing news for all Sevillistas and shows the true passion and heart of a player to turn his back on the big money and fame to stay at a humble club which is slowly progressing towards becoming a European giant and where succeeding for him is an understatement.
Fredi follows in the footsteps of David Villa who signed a contract earlier this year with hugely disappointing Valencia. This man is truly a legend and we need more people like this in the game. This is what he had to say about his new deal.
“I have reached the peak of my career in Sevilla.”
“I am delighted to have signed a new contract with the club that has offered me so much.”
“Here I am loved by the fans and the people in the club, they show tremendous appreciation.”
“And now, I hope that I can continue to provide positive performances at the club and achieve goals.”
The deal will keep Kanouté in the Andalucían capital until he is 34 years young and if he can keep up his form of recent I have no doubts that he will succeed every minute while in Sevilla.

Thank God for that. We need him and Fabiano and Navas (my fav player). Lets be honest Kone isn’t the same quality and Cheva was good in the preseasons but hes always injured

kanoute is a great player, without him fabiano can’t score so much goals for us

Thats not true Aquismania, hes been our main goalscorer before. I know we havent been winning by massive margins but weve been scoring, mostly Fredi with the goals

i agree that fabiano can definitely score without kanoute and vice versa… but its quite true that they seem to both play best together. together they are better than the sum of their parts.

Theo, first off just like to say that I’m happy to see the Sevillistas are present in the UK. Secondly, I totally agree, Koné is decent but no where near the skill level of Kanouté and Cheva is decent but spends more time with the medical staff than the squad.
Aquismaia, I agree, it seems like they have quite the solid partnership going and they’re much more effective when together rather than one or the other playing alone. Both are class alone, but together they’re simply amazing.

this is great news because kanouté is arguably our most widely recognized player (maybe not in spain, but outside of it). so to nail him down for another 3 years is a great sign that our best players are wanting to stay in sevilla. kanouté has obviously bought into what the organization is building and wants to be a bigger part of that progress. even though he talked about milan, i think he knew in the back of his mind that he could never be for milan who he is for us. and that’s a good reason to not leave. it’s also one reason why it is so satisfying to sign him again.

i dont disagree with you necessarily aaron. certainly kanoute likes being here in sevilla, probably believes in the management, and likes being a hero for his team. but he also says he has limited years left. he probably doesnt want to uproot his family again, and he built an entire mosque in sevilla! so his ties to the city im sure are pretty strong.
i agree on your points, but i just think there are probably other considerations in there as well (not that you were saying there aren’t).

i’m sure you are right about those things. certainly if we weren’t in such a good position to make the CL for next year, though, you have to think he’d more seriously consider moving on. from the perspective of the club, this means a lot. i know you aren’t taking any of that away with what you said, but that was what i was trying to highlight. on the other hand, i doubt he would be staying – even with very strong ties to the city – if he were playing for betis. kanouté staying = great for sevilla’s image. although i’m sure kanouté staying = great for his family too.

It goes without saying that Kanouté is definitely our most recognized player worldwide and keeping him locked in a deal with us is the best possible move for not only the present state of the club but it also sets the intentions of where we are headed for the future.
By keeping Fredi we have showed that we’re no longer a feeder team and one that will crack at the likes of AC Milan et al. I like to see Monchi and del Nido putting their foot down and working their negotiations professionally and I don’t doubt for a minute that Kanouté will continue to be successful in Nervión for many years to come.
