Recreativo 0-1 Sevilla; Kanouté and Jiménez set Sevilla Records
By: Anthony | April 5th, 2009
A bit late on this one but yesterday I actually never got to watch the match as I was watching my beloved local Toronto FC get smashed by Seattle. I did record it however and just finished watching it.
It was a battle of two teams close in geography but far in the league table. We dominated throughout most of the match but at the same time, Recre definitely used their home advantage to get some momentum behind them.
The game started with Navas threatening down the right flank like he always does and putting in an early cross for Kanouté who just about missed but Romaric was following up and smashed his shot wide of the target. It was Kanouté again a few minutes later who rifled a free kick over the goal as we were really pressing to get a lead at this point.
Recre showed no signs of discouragement though as Cristian Maidana came in one-on-one with Palop but the Huelva man hit it disgracefully weak and wide of our goal.
It was pretty back and forth but 12 minutes before the half we got our breakthrough. Renato burst through the Recre box but was brought down by Poli which saw us receive a penalty. Kanouté finished with ease and gave us a well deserved lead going into half.
The second half was all about us as Recre played very defensive and looked to not have the score run up even more. The scoreline doesn’t really say anything as we could have easily added a few more goals with the amount of chances we had.
Our second should have come through Duscher as he was given a perfect ball by Navas but showed just why he’s a defensive midfielder as he smashed it over the goal. Towards the end of the match also Kanouté was sent in on goal but the Recre keeper came out smartly to deny Big Fredi his 91st goal in the Rojiblanco.
The match never got easier for our fellow Andalucíans as Aitor Tornavaca was sent off in the 90th minute for receiving his second yellow.
The match ended 1-0 in our favour but the scoreline doesn’t say much as we completely dominated most of the match not only on possession but also in regards to goal opportunities.
The win combined with Villarreal’s humiliating loss to Almería cements us very nicely in that third position for next year’s Champions League.
Records, Records Everywhere!
Kanouté’s goal yesterday means he now has 90 in our colours and that equals the legendary Croatian International Davor Suker for the most goals by a foreigner in the Rojiblanco. The man who signed a new deal just a few days ago keeping him in Nervión until 2012 has already made himself a Sevilla legend, the future is looking more than promising for Big Fredi.
With our win yesterday we sit in third place on 57 points which is a Sevilla record point tally for this stage in the season. Jiménez has had a hard time convincing the media and us Sevillistas (myself included) that he is worthy of the position this year but looking at all the statistics and our recent form I don’t see why we would be looking for anyone else. In the 2006/2007 season at this point Barcelona who were the league leaders sat on 56 points meaning if we had done this 2 years ago we would currently be league leaders. Of course it is now 2009 and the circumstances have changed but it shouldn’t take away from the fact that Jiménez is doing a fantastic job and things are progressing nicely in Nervión. The transfers from last summer like Romaric and Squillaci have cemented a place in the first team and are showing exactly why Monchi signed them in the first place.
Last but not least, with our win we now have gone 7 games undefeated which is composed of a massive 6 wins and 1 draw – This is a season record thus far.
We now turn our focus to next Sunday where we travel back home to play Getafe in a match where we also look to continue our unbeaten run and the pressure on Real Madrid for that important second spot in the league.

ha!
thanks for the write up and sorry about your toronto fc. ive been delighted by my revolution’s unexpectedly quick start…
i totally agree regarding jimenez at this point. he deserves to at least start next season for us. we’ll see.
otherwise, i think its funny that we make a big deal of the second spot. i understand that it would be fun to beat out real madrid. and in that sense it actually would be significant. it sends a message to the league and to the footballing world that we are for real. it might help us attract players and to keep others with us. so i understand the emotional/psychological impact of 2nd as opposed to 3rd place.
BUT in reality, it doesnt mean anything. this year 3rd place is a direct qualification for the champs league with no additional qualifying games, and since there’s no second place trophy in la liga, there is really no difference between 2nd and 3rd. there IS a difference with 4th because of the requirement of a playoff game… anyway. just a ramble.
i both understand on one hand, and think its silly on the other, that such a big deal is made of 2nd as opposed to 3rd place.

Anthony, this is awful!!! Sevilla should come before any club, especially this ‘Toronto FC’.
only joking.

-

One other thing, who’s our top 5 of goalscorers

-

TFC were terrible on Saturday. Schooled by an ‘expansion’ team! Glad I didn’t go to the game.

-

SRH, to me a second place finish would just mean finishing ahead of Madrid like you said but since I hate Real to no end, it would hold a bit more significance than that. It also like you said would possibly help us attract players of higher calibre and show Europe our intentions in Sevilla.
Theo, thanks for being a loyal reader and of course Sevilla is ahead of Toronto FC, but it was the home opener so I had to go! To answer your question, our top five goal scorers are Kanouté with 16 goals, Renato with 7, Luis Fabiano with 6, Jesús Navas and Adriano both with 3. Those include all competitions and its also pretty clear that we’re a very low scoring team. I guess as long as we get the right results there’s no need to complain right?
TFC was a joke Matteo, but the refereeing was also pretty embarrassing…

-

Hey anthony,
i think you made a mistake on that. those totals are not for all competitions, just for la liga.
fabiano for example has an additional 6 goals in copa del rey and 2 in uefa. i didnt get to go through all of the other players… we’re low scoring. but not THAT low scoring.
here’s fabiano’s stats
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=18599&cc=5901

You got me curious now. Here are our top goal scorers:
Fabiano: 25 games 14 goals (6-Liga 6-Copa 2-UEFA) 0 assists
Kanoute: 30 games 20 goals (16-Liga 2-Copa 2-UEFA)6 assists
Renato: 25 games 9 goals (7-Liga 0-Copa 2-UEFA) 2 assistsok… getting bored of doing the breakdown… other notables:
Adriano: 5 goals 2 assists
Navas: 4 goals 9 assists
Diego Capel : 1 goal 1 assist (REALLY!?! is that it? no wonder Perotti has replaced him)anyway… the more i look at these numbers from soccernet the less and less sure i am that they are accurate… it list squillaci with zero but he has DEFINITELY scored for us this year… anyone have a more reliable source?
bottom line is that kanoute has been decisively our best striker, followed decisively by fabuloso.

-

SRH, my mistake, it is only in La Liga. I got my info off of as.com. It’s biased when it comes to information but the statistics should be accurate.
Like you noted though, it goes without saying Kanouté has easily been our top scorer thus far.

-

interesting that renato is decisively our third best attacker (since navas is more of an assist and less of a finish type of guy). ive gotten frustrated with him this season and forget that he’s actually tallied a decent total for us.

-

Question:
Duda. What do we do with him next year? I always thought he was good for us last year. He’s having a very good season for malaga with 4 goals and 8 assists. And he’s not that old at 28. what do we do with him? does this factor at all into our thoughts of buy/sell in regard to our other wingers? anyone have a sense for what we could get for him if we shopped him around to other teams? like would malaga pay 5 million for him? is that way too low? way too high? i have no feel for the market in these things… just curious for everyones thoughts. i think he’s a very good player, and i forget that he actually still belongs to us…

-

I agree, I very easily get frustrated with Renato, he’s so hot and cold. What I sometimes forget is that most of his goals have been crucial ones in the dying minutes.
About Duda, he was alright in Nervión for us last year but nothing spectacular. Personally I would sell him to Málaga or any other takers for that matter while we can still get a price for him. We have way too much talent on the flanks to be worried about Duda. With Perotti, Adriano, Capel, Navas and also De Mul returning next year we are spoiled for choice there. If we can get 5 million Euros for him I’d be happy. With the way the market is going we can probably maybe squeeze an extra million or two out of the buyers and put that money towards solving our right back problem (still not convinced by Mosquera or Konko and Adriano is a left footer, as good as he is I’d much rather see him on the left side).

-

Also, I posted the highlights in the post for anyone that is interested.

-

Im glad i inspired such conversation but when i asked about top 5 goalscorers i meant alltime

-

ha!
well here are the top five. not sure what their actual totals are:
Guillermo Campanal, Juan Arza, Pato Araujo, Kanoute, Suker.
Can probably wikipedia each of those guys to find out how many they had.

thanx
